Which is the first place they lived Joseph (that you know of)? It might be worth looking at the whole of the North, maybe even Scotland. Mary Horner at Romany Road may be able to help. I do have Smiths, but all Warwicks/Northants. I presume you've got the census records? Most Romany folk were baptised, that could be an option, to get copies of the baptism entries.

Thank you Romany Star.
I will try and locate baptism entries. I have little information on my Grandfarther who was a George Smith he used to deal and work with horses, then opened their own buisnes and lived in Liverpool. I no he had relations in Lancaster who owened a Scrap Yard,Names of Fred / Ethel / Danial / Blanch / Eliza. ialso beleve i had some conection to an Evangelist Smith who whent to the USA. As you will no a lot of Romany's came from Europe and name changes.
Again thank you for your help.

Trudy, I can do my best but no promises. We need names, places, and years. If you can find any of these out from your family or certificates I'll have a mooch around and email a few people. x

Joseph, thats actually a good deal to go on, many people have hardly anything. Re: Lancaster, have you written to the local papers, or maybe you could go up there for a weekend? Regarding the person who emigrated to the USA, there may be a record on the passenger lists. Depending when it was, the American census may throw some clues up. Im really sorry I cant offer more, but if you put a message in the guestbooks of Romanygenes and Romany Road someone might recognise the names. All my Smith's were Warks/Oxon based.

At the min I dont know. Her father was a labourer, then an engine cleaner, and they lived in a house; although there were many gypsies around the Stone area. It could have been her stepfather? I notice the family moved to Swanscombe by 1901, if its the correct Alma then her mum remarried 1891-1901.

Update, I dont think the Alma on the 1901 is yours, so be wary there are 2 Alma Day's born the same year, same place.

It'll be worth posting on the sites Ive mentioned. Ive already posted on Gypsies Passing Through for you. You need Alma's family before she was born, ie census reports pre 1881. I can do this if you havent already.

Angela, I'll do my best and ask around. If you order Ivy's birth cert it'll give you her mums name. Then you can find her ancestors too, they may be Romany. Have pm'ed you.
