I think we have all accepted that Fred will not be with us for long now.

He was about the same this morning but is not really improving at all now although he is still eating. Half a banana, a slice of ham, tube of fromage frais, most of a tin of chicken soup, many, many wine gums and fish and chips( three or four chips and a little piece of battered fish). He has been drinking some tea and squash.

Tonight felt quite tribal and right. OH, Fred's mate and I sat in the room with fish and chips and OH sat at Fred's bed table feeding him fish and chips at the same time. It felt very close and warm.

I am feeling surprisingly calm, maybe because it is ninety- four years of life drawing to a close and how much longer would anybody want to live? It is not as if he has anything yet to do.

Meanwhile, we are cooking the village lunch for tomorrow. I won't be able to go as the doctor is coming so have cooked a curry for forty people today that OH will be able to sort out tomorrow. He will cook the rice at the church hall, put out the mango chutney I made months ago in readiness and the raita I made tonight which just needs the cucumber putting in in the morning. We bought the poppadums, naan breads and onion bahjis when they were on offer at Tesco's recently and there is kulfi in the freezer that I spent hours reducing half a gallon of milk to make.

Think I might actually sleep tonight!

Well you can't say Fred doesn't get a varied diet despite his penchant for sausage sandwiches on a Wednesday. Hope he will continue to force down these tasty morsels you find him Sharron, but do get him to leave the wine gums for afters lol

Well done to his mate for Fred sitting so you could get out for a change even if it was only for shopping and well done to you for looking after him so well.

What a trouper Fred is. Sharron you are an amazing person and I don't know how you do it. I do hope you can get some sleep. I think you need to buy lots of tinned salmon for Fred, maybe you could have some as it seems to be doing Fred some good. Take care. xx

Today we went shopping because Fred's mate was here to look after him.

I went round looking for little nutritious things tempt his appetite, fromage frais tubes, pot of rice, yoghurt and a tin of red salmon because I thought I might drop a little piece in his mouth from time to time to tempt him to take a little nourishment.

He had already had half a banana. a slice of ham and numerous wine gums today so I offered him a little salmon which went down after much shoving round the mouth and munching.
He had this piece in his mouth for a while, munching away, when he suddenly puckered up his lips and delivered a half sucked wine gum. Interesting combination of flavours that , it was a red one!

The first piece met with approval, as did the next, and the next, and the one after that! He ate the whole bloody tin!

Followed that with a piece of avocado and a tube of fromage frais.

Eating like a man who has given up? I don't think so!
