I have rencetly been contacted by a lady called Vera Crockett, who is the daughter of Arthur, the brother of my great grandmother Nellie Crockett. Vera was only 3 when her father died and knows little about him. What she does know is he was in the Irish Dragoon gaurds and fought in WW1 (he eventauly died in 1931 from the effects of being gassed). She'd heard he'd been awarded some medals, but had some taken away. I managed to find his medal card, and he was awarded the British Medal, the Victory medal and the 1914 star. Next to the first 2 it says 'Returned - medal forfeited'. It looks like it also says 'birch 27/7/21'. Next to the 1914 Star it says 'no further action re: recovery of 1914 Star'. There is also a lot of other bit on there, they all look like ref no.s. In order to find out more, I assume she will now have to go to Kew and see if his military records survive. Is that correct, and if so what info will she need to take? Also, does anyone have any idea what kind of thing you would have to do to forfeit your medals? Incidently, Veras mother died when she was just 9, and she lost contact with her fathers side of the family. Thanks to Genes last Monday she met her cousin, my grandmother (who is 94) only the second relative of her fathers she has met in the last 60 years. Darren.

It should also be noted that many individuals forfeited their campaign medals due to a disciplinary infringement from National Archives site
