Great news Sharron, hope Fred enjoys the presentation and the Cava, I must ask my neighbour if he was involved. I seem to remember he got a medal to do with the Russian convoys a few years back tho, wonder if it's the same thing

From one Fred to another ,well done friend ,all of you should have been recognized many years ago ,by our government ,and not ,at the time, left to the Russians to give all the lads on the Arctic convoys recognition.Fred. :-D

Sharron Report 18 Jun 2013 09:15

He didn't get the one from Russia.

Don't know how you would go about getting that one. It may only have been awarded to men on certain convoys or members of veterans associations who applied for it.

We only have had any dealings with them through SSAFA since he had his stroke and the Burma Star Association funded the shed.

Well done, and not before time.
Perhaps a nice hot cup of kye might be appropriate as well as the Cava!

To save those not in the know Googling, Kye is hot very sweet chocolate / cocoa given to watch keepers on RN ships.

He didn't volunteer. None of them did. They went where they were sent after they were conscripted.

Brave is dealing with what you are dealt.

Just about everybody was dealt a bummer between 1939 and 1945.

My Great uncle died when HMS Forester was hit, those men must have felt as though they were forgotten :-)

I am so pleased Fred will be getting his well deserved medal. :-D :-D <3

A couple of hours with the Daddies Sauce and I think the other medals are just about fit to go down the church hall with us.

Got to dig out a couple of photographs of young Fred the matelot and, of course, his bluenose. Six bottles of Cava.

What a rave-up it will be to be sure!

And well done Sharron for making it possible for him to receive his medal.

You deserve a medal too, imo :-D <3

He is going to hate me for it.

Can't pretend that I would much enjoy having it sprung on me but it is only a small gathering of about thirty and they do all know him.

Serves him right for earning a medal, I say.

He might scowl but inside I bet he will be pleased and proud, Sharron. I think my neighbour got a letter about his and had to fill in a form before it was sent. Don't think he applied for it.

My Dad got the Burma Star too SSAFA helped Mum and Dad a bit when Dad had cancer.

Enjoy the party, loved the pic thanks.

I have just been researching a man who served in submarines in Arctic Circle from 1916-1919. I could not believe how brave he was.

And conditions would not have been much better in WW2. Many congrats to Fred and I hope people tomorrow lunchtime realise how specially brave he was all those years ago. :-)

He is downstairs, beavering away, shouting upstairs to demand more washing.

He is completely oblivious to the ordeal he has to come. Tee-hee-hee!
