Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Mar 2010 00:38

It just say sarah 11 female servant and I take it her brother is a blacksmith. Have you got Bennett's then?

I was wondering if Richard was William's brother? Or cousin?

Gooing off now as it's late night all.

So I have this Rogers family, they had more children after 1881,

Herbert 1883, Frederick 1886, Emily 1887 and Lucy 1890.

The older sister Eva Jane moved to Manchester, married there and moved to Morecambe.

Now according to MIL, (who was at least vague, and often wrong), the sister Lucy also settled in Morecambe, having married a man surname Leigh, they had a son Norman, who MIL disliked because 'of the way he treated his mother'. Norman married and had a son in about 1951.

I cannot find a marriage for Lucy in freeBMD, well, there is one in Eastry, but that couple have a number of children born around the same time as Norman, 1924.
Nor can I find a death for Lucy which was probably in the late 1950's/early sixties.

So I'm looking for a marriage for Lucy Rogers to Mr Leigh, a marriage for Norman Leigh who had a son about 1951, a death for Lucy Leigh.

Can anyone help please?

I've managed to sort out Lucy now, but have another query.

OH and his sis remember an auntie Elsie, apparently sis to Eva. However I have no evidence of an Elsie in this family. There is Alice E, and I suppose it might turn out to be her after all. The only Elsie Rogers born around that time was in Oswestry, and I don't think it's her.

But now we've found a postcard in MIL's stuff. It's a photo of the old Smithy (I've been there, it's a house now). The card was posted in Whitchurch, in 1938, and says
'Dear Eva, just been through the old homestead which is now empty. Just going to see mother's grave. Love Elsie and Will'

So Elsie does appear to be Eva's sis, there is no brother Will so she's not a sis in law.

I have censuses, in 1901, mother Jane was a widow with a blacksmith business, and some of her children were living with her. Jane must have moved to Manchester soon after with some of her daughters, as she remarries the same year a Frederick C Mason. In 1911 they live in Gorton with Lucy. Eva also lives in the Manchester area, having married in 1906.

Can anyone shed any light on where Elsie fits in please?

also, I wonder if "Elsie" was a pet name for one of the sisters?

My nan was Edith May but always called May. I wonder if Alice was Elsie?

Thanks for the blacksmith link, I have had it before.

I did wonder about Alice E, maybe get her birth cert. Or has her name been misheard Aliceee=Elsiee.

I did wonder last night if maybe Elsie was a cousin, I'm just presuming that she was a sis. But the father and uncle were both blacksmiths, and a number of other cousins were from Sandford. Sandford is a tiny place, not much there apart from the Hall and the Smithy, so I would think that anyone from there with that name was related.

The PC also fits for Elsie as Eva's niece, it seems to me.
I could quite see me sending that message on a PC to my aunt.

Thanks, mgnv, that's something I hadn't considered, though OH and his sis say that auntie Elsie was an old lady, similar to grandma Eva.

I've found a 1911 census record for Elsie Rogers age 24 born 1887 Sandford, Fouls (should be Fauls). She is living in Caernarvonshire, as a lodger, I think. Would someone kindly check this for me, and see if there's anything for her in an earlier census? Thank you.
