Thanks Malcom ,my father was quite insistant on using the Mac and the capital D but as he didn't live in Scotland most of his life he may not have known the Irish/scottish convention . Not much likelihood of any of us getting to edinburgh in the near future
'
Argyllgran so nice of you to post the 1911 details we hadn't got them as had been more involved withtracing maternal relatives .

Alisoun Report 23 Jul 2013 08:03

There are several macdermids/mcdermids from Cumbuslang on family trees but noone seems to have more than 1 of my ancestors names and birth date ;i usually contact people who have more than 1 faamily member listed as it avoids mixing with distant cousins of same names but will try a few .

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 1 Oct 2013 00:36

my grandmother Mary(Polly)Blaine Stevenson always said she was a distant cousin of grandad Macdermid but i haven't worked out the connection yet ; via great grandma Kyle i think .
2 of grandma's sisters also married their cousins Stevenson + Mcfarlane names
These names crop up when I'm looking at the wrong Macdermids ....so i'm guessing this was very common in close knit communities .

brigid Report 24 Apr 2014 08:31

I have been unable to trace cousins of my father's (Eric Macdermid 1950-2003) ;He was son of Thomas Allen b1903 and would have been named Malcolm if his parents had continued with the traditional naming system
Grandparents Malcolm 1862 in Old Monkshead and Jeannie nee Kyle b1864 cambuslang had 10 children (eldest Duncan b.1882 youngest John b1911 )
It would be easier to find out about their children if I lived in Scotland not Leicester !

brigid Report 8 May 2014 04:55

There is a Duncan macdermid who is over here from Canada until mid-june ;I actually deleted his messsage with his email+. I hope he comes back on here to look for us)contact numbers.judith wants us to pass her no too

brigid Report 26 Jul 2014 16:32

Update ;we actually managed to meet up with this distant cousin , who left Cumbuslang as a teenager + we shared our common family knowledge +some family traits over an enjoyable pub meal
Alisoun + I still haven't haven't managed to trace any of our father Eric's first cousins who have grandparents Malcom Macdermid b1862 + jeannie macdermid b1862 .

Hi, Brigid -

I assume this is Thomas Allan McDermid's birth?
1903 MACDERMID THOMAS ALLAN M OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0249

So you're looking for any children of Thomas's siblings, as shown in the 1911 census posted earlier (23rd June 2013)? Have I understood you correctly?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jul 2014 17:36

Thomas's brother Andrew's birth:

1891 MACDERMID ANDREW KYLE M OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0269

His marriage (to a McDiarmid - note spelling!):

1920 MCDERMID ANDREW K MCDIARMID ELIZABETH CAMBUSLANG GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 627/00 0161

And his death:
1964 MACDERMID ANDREW KYLE Not Permissible M 73 EAST KILBRIDE /LANARK 643/00 0447

Unfortunately, it's not possible to factor in mother's ms when searching for children on SP, and there are so many McDermid or variant births after 1920 in Lanarkshire, that it's impossible to know which, if any, were theirs. There were 44 McDermids born in Lanarkshire, without taking variations of spelling into account, 1920-30.
Assuming they lived in Old Monkland (but maybe they lived elsewhere) there are these possibilities:

1925 MCDERMID ANNIE HANLON F COATBRIDGE OR OLD MONKLAND /LANARK 652/02 0937

1923 MCDERMID CHRISTINA BUCHA F COATBRIDGE OR OLD MONKLAND /LANARK 652/02 1129

1924 MCDERMID DUNCAN M COATBRIDGE OR OLD MONKLAND /LANARK 652/02 0120

1930 MCDERMID MARY GRANT F COATBRIDGE OR OLD MONKLAND /LANARK 652/02 0014

But you'd have to buy the certs to see who the parents were.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jul 2014 17:50

Probably brother Duncan's birth:

1882 MCDERMID DUNCAN M OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0288

He wasn't with the rest of the family in 1911. There's nothing entered in the boxes for number of children born alive or still living.

Possibly his death??

1910 MACDERMID DUNCAN M 27 OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0116

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jul 2014 18:10

Brother Malcolm's birth:

1894 MACDERMID MALCOLM M OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0020

This is probably him - their address in 1911 was in the district of Carmyle:

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 about Malcolm McDermid
Name: Malcolm McDermid

Birth Place: Carmyle, Lanark
Age at Enlistment: 19

Form Title: Territorial Force Attestation
Family Members:
Name Relation to Soldier
Malcolm McDermid Self (Head)

He enlisted 23rd January 1913.
His home address is partly obliterated, but what is visible could easily be part of 92 River Road, his 1911 address.
He was a shoemaker.

yes argyllgran that is the correct birth for my grandad ..I've been looking at members trees and you're so right about the various spellings . I've contacted a few on the off chance ...i'll just re read your other posts before adding more comments Thanks so much for all this hard work .

brigid

brigid Report 26 Jul 2014 19:02

yes argyllgran I am looking for grandad tommy's siblings and their children .
If Duncan died in 1910 aged 27 could he have married + had children before then
Malcolm may have married after his army career he was still young ...unlike his brother Walter who died in 1916 Royal Scots fussiliers
I wonder if Andrew also enlisted ?
As their father died in 1911 it must have been hard or them
i'm not sure of the accuracy of the married names of Jeannie + Agnes haven't found any proof that they married J.Black + J .Robertson respectively the marriages could have been in New Zealand /USA for all I know.
My aunt knows that her aunt Chrissie brought her a doll from the USA in the 30's but whether she was living there or visiting a sister I don't know .

brigid

brigid Report 28 Jul 2014 17:01

I have made contacts with 2 people who are related to cousins of my grandfather ;they share ancestors Duncan MacDermid b C1830+Agnes Mcfarlane

but still no evidence of cousins of my father with grandparents Malcolm Macd B1862 +Jean Kyle 1864

and I have 1 more spelling ; MacDermed
thanks for the possible death dates .Argyll/gran Are the last names of the women their married names rather than middle names ?

I will cross check on members family trees to see if the names Hanlon, come up with Mcdermids

I think I can dismiss the 1923 death of Christine Bucha as she is the 1 aunt who my aunt has memories of from the 30's or 40's
and grandad didn't have a sister mary so i won't check the mary grant one unless that could be a sister in law .

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jul 2014 20:53

You asked about the last names of "the women", Brigid.
Sorry, which women do you mean?

The only death dates I've posted are those of Thomas, Andrew and Duncan.

If you mean the list of possible births of possible children of Andrew, Mcdermid is the surname, as they are birth records. These women wouldn't be your grandfather's sisters, anyway. If they were daughters of Andrew, they would be his nieces.

Annie Hanlon Mcdermid, Christina Buchan (or Buchanan) Mcdermid, and Mary Grant Mcdermid.
The "Bucha" in Christine's name is just the abbreviation which shows up on SP for her middle name - the name would actually be either Buchan or Buchanan, but you'd have to see the actual cert to see the full name.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jul 2014 21:27

Here's Agnes's marriage. If you buy credits on SP you can see the image, and print it.

1919 ROBERTSON JAMES MACDERMID AGNES OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0040

I don't see a marriage in Scotland for Jeannie, at least not if the groom was J Black, and if we assume the marriage would have been in Old Monkland.

brigid

brigid Report 29 Jul 2014 00:08

sorry Argyll gran yes i did get confused and thought they were deaths ..but I am looking for my grandad' thomas' nephews /neices as they would be my father's cousins
if i understand ;Annie Hanlon Macdermid ,christine..bucha...and Mary Grant Macdermid could all be Andrew Kyle macdermid's daughters ....or another of grandad's brothers .
the middle names may be clues to spouses name good for elimination purposes anyway .i'm tempted to look now but was on my way to bed

re marriage of Agmes ; james robertson was the name given by my aunt so that one is right ;she was vaguer about j.black could that have been Christine's husband ?

Alisoun

Alisoun Report 29 Jul 2014 08:18

The distant cousins I have found so far have the Mac spelling in the 1900's that is the spelling on Walter's WW1 records
and his sister Agnes marriage by all account
so it's strange that Malcolm's war records show Mc
but Andrew Kyle Mc/Macdermid is the proof that consistancy did not prevail after 1900 if he was born Mac
married as Mc and died as Mac .

If Agnes + james robertson had children it could have been in USA

also whichever sister Jean or chrissie married J Black it could have been in New Zealand
Just wondering why last daughter not 1st was not named after maternal grandma ..could poor Jeannie Macdermid have had yet another child between Duncan + Agnes who died before the 1891 census .

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 29 Jul 2014 13:12

Christina (Chrissie) was MAC at birth, at least. No middle name.

1907 MACDERMID CHRISTINA F OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0216

SP doesn't show any marriages for a Christina (or variant) Mcdermid (or variant) to anyone named Black, 1924-50, anywhere in Scotland.
Also no marriages for her to anyone of any name in Old Monklands.

brigid

brigid Report 29 Jul 2014 16:23

That makes sense because she was only 3 in 1911 probably taken to USA (with baby brother John )+ with Agnes + James Robertson sometime after 1919 ...we'll have to wait for 1921 Census. that's where they are remembered as being in the 30's/40's .although my aunt said jeannie went to new Zealand ..I can't ask for confirmation at the moment as her husband is very ill .
