Colin, what research have you actually done? Have you tried to locate a marriage for them?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 20:11

Looks like they may have waited a while before having Louisa baptised:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906
Name: Louisa Elizabeth Scott
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 19 Mar 1899
Father's Name: George Thomas Scott - Shirtcutter

Colin

Colin Report 29 Jul 2013 20:28

Elizabeth Scott was 59 in 1911 and was born in 1852 at Middlesex London, I would like to trace her Father`s Family. Colin.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 20:42

Yes, I'd already found that!

As previously asked, what research have you done already? Have you looked for their marriage? Or the birth of Louisa? (Her birth certificate would give you Elizabeth's maiden name which is going to be needed in order to find out more about her).

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 20:45

Just working back for clues. Elizabeth is born 1861 per the 1901 census (Thomas George must be away somewhere):

SCOTT, Elizabeth Wife Married F 40 1861 Dressmaker Hackney, London
SCOTT, Louise Daughter F 8 1893 Hackney, London

Piece: 360 Folio: 9 Page: 10
Registration District: St Saviour
Southwark Civil Parish: Christchurch Southwark

Address: 94, Ponsonby Buildings, Christchurch Southwark County: London

(The address matches that of Louisa's baptism)

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 20:54

Interesting. Thomas G isn't with Elizabeth on the 1901. Is this him elsewhere?

SCOTT, Thomas G Head Married M 50 1851 Mantle Cutter Yorkshire
SCOTT, Alice M Daughter Single F 22 1879 Vellum Sewer Rotherhithe, London
SHIPMAN, Emily A Cousin Widow F 52 1849 Cook (Domestic) London
HEDGES, Jemima Cousin Single F 50 1851 Vellum Sewer Bethnal Green, London

Piece: 282 Folio: 123 Page: 5
Registration District: Bethnal Green
Civil Parish: Bethnal Green

Address: 17, Durant Street, Bethnal Green County: London

The 1911 says they only had one daughter so who is Alice M?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 20:59

Curiouser still in 1891:

SCOTT Thomas G Head Widower M 40 1851 Mantle Cutter Hessle, Yorkshire
SCOTT, Minnie F Daughter F 14 1877 Sewer Book Trade Stepney, London

Piece: 259 Folio: 6 Page: 5
Registration District: Bethnal Green

Address: 17, Durant Street, Bethnal Green County: London

(Emily A Shipman from the 1901 is next door)

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 21:04

On the 1911 census it says that Thomas George and Elizabeth were married 26 years, that appears to be a fabrication. That marriage would have been around 1885 and clearly Thomas is a widower without a wife around in 1891 and 1901.

The 26 years may relate just to him and would be how long he'd been married if his wife was still alive. EDIT: Or it may refer to how long they'd been in a relationship although not living together.

Although Louisa was baptised in the name of Scott (some 6 years after her birth) I suspect her birth was registered in her mother's maiden name and until we find out what that is we can't find out anything further about Elizabeth.

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 21:17

This appears to be Thomas George's first marriage:

Spouse Name: Susannah Pickford

Parish: Stepney St Dunstan and All Saints
Borough: Tower Hamlets
Father Name: Thomas Scott - Master Mariner
Spouse Father Name: James Pickford - Fishmonger
Register Type: Parish Register

Neither previously married. Both give address as 23 Bedford Square

You really wonder if she finally talked him into it:
Marriages Jun 1909 (>99%)
LOCKETT John Patrick Southwark 1d 251
SCOTT Thomas George Southwark 1d 251
WALKER Emily Southwark 1d 251
WEBB Elizabeth Southwark 1d 251

I think John Lockett married Emily.

Probably a red herring but there IS a birth fot a Louisa Elizabeth WEBB in Hackney in 1892.

I don't know!!!!!!!

Maureen

EDIT: Long overdue.....fot????? for

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 22:04

Interesting Maureen!

If it was them married 1909 then I guess they mightn't have wanted to say married 2 years on the 1911 when they had an 18 year old daughter.

I think it may be well worth Colin taking a punt on that marriage cert to see if that Thomas George is some sort of cutter. Shame there's no parish record to be found for it.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jul 2013 22:46

Colin

Colin Report 30 Jul 2013 11:56

My Mother was Louisa Elizabeth Scott, she often spoke about the Webb name so I guess she was born with that name. I suppose now that I should research that name.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 30 Jul 2013 13:00

Hello Colin, it would have been useful if you had mentioned that Webb connection at the outset.

I think your next step should be to order a copy of that 1909 marriage for Thomas George Scott to Elizabeth Webb and hope that it is your couple. There are quite a few Elizabeth Webbs around so the certificate may give info as to who her father was.

What about all of the other information posted? Was it of use to you? Were you already aware of this information? Did your mother ever mention half sisters?

EDIT: There's always the chance, given Elizabeth's age, that she had previously been married so Webb would not be her maiden name.
