Does anyone have an update on this please? My great grandparents were Emily and Fredrick Townsend and my grandmother used to say that her parents fostered children which fits in with what's been said on here. Thanks

Poor Consuelo!

Re Ethel -
There was time for her to have been promoted from laundrymaid to chambermaid between 1901 and 1904 when she became pregnant (one of those male servants at Blenheim, maybe?).

Or maybe she had to leave Blenheim, and got another position.

Rambling Report 15 Oct 2013 22:29

Interesting to read about Consuelo Marlborough

"Consuelo Vanderbilt was married at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, New York City, New York, on 6 November 1895, to Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough (1871–1934).[15] They had two sons, John Albert William Spencer-Churchill, Marquess of Blandford (who became 10th Duke of Marlborough) and Lord Ivor Spencer-Churchill.[16]"

"Consuelo’s marriage was particularly unhappy. Blackmailed by her social-climbing mother into giving up the man she loved in favour of the duke, she was horrified when, on her honeymoon, the duke told her that he ‘never wanted to marry her either’. He was in love with someone else, but needed Consuelo’s fortune to keep Blenheim going. Consuelo did her duty and produced two sons, ‘an heir and a spare’, but the couple were never happy and began to live apart as soon as they decently could. They were eventually divorced in 1921. "
