JoonieCloonie Report 20 Mar 2016 14:12

this is a list from familysearch of Salus*lia births recorded in Torino (which seems to be the source of the surname, and covers Alice Costello I believe)

http://tinyurl.com/je5mmvs

there is one record at familysearch of a person with father Secondo (no Secondino), born c1893, married in 1921 in New York, mother Margherita.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24WK-5CV

from other records there, her husband Andrew Bovero was from Torino

I would look wherever you can for people who have the surname (variations) in their family tree because I expect most of them originate in the Torino region and there is a family relationship among most of them.

if you use google to search for

Salussoglia Torino

then google will offer you, for each search result, the option to 'translate this page'

there is a Salussoglia law firm in Torino (Turin), for example
this is a link to the English translation of that webpage

https://translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://www.salussoglia.com/&prev=search

I searched also for

Salussoglia torino english

here is a facebook page for a young Salussolia who speaks colourful English (she has strong opinions so be forewarned) and who studied in Torino

https://www.facebook.com/sara.salussolia.9

maybe someone like that would be interested in helping you find family who might know about the family history

and aha, here is lawyer in the USA who is from Alice Costello!

http://pspalaw.com/staff/piero-salussolia-esq/

he has been knighted by the Italian Republic for his services to the Italian community :-)

He looks like the best source I see for making contact with people who might point you in the right direction for your research.

Margaret

this is Giuseppe and Giovanna's marriage registration from www.freebmd.org.uk

Marriages Dec 1907 (>99%)

NICOLOTTI Giovanna Holborn 1b 1302
SALUSSOGLIA Giuseppe Holborn 1b 1302

You need this information to order their marriage certificate, if you do not already have it.

You order from GRO (General Register Office), and you will need the set of two numbers shown after Holborn (ie, 1b 1302)

The certificate will cost you £9.25, including post and handling, no matter where you live in the world.

Joonie gave you the GRO website address above, and I repeat it here ...............

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You have to sign in tot he site, but it is free to do that.

Just fill in the names EXACTLY as shown in the freebmd registration.

thanks for the private message Margaret, yes we regulars always check 'my threads' when we log in, to see whether any thread we have posted a message in has anything new ... and no matter how old the thread, it will show up :-)

we didn't go any further because you did not come back to the thread with any more info or questions that might be answered

the 1939 register that Rose has posted confirms the info you have, but there is nothing else available on line that anyone can find

did you ever in the last 2+ years get the marriage certificate of Giuseppe Salussoglia and Giovanna Nicolotti in 1907? to learn their fathers' names, if they stated them

that isn't something someone else will find for you, since it needs to be paid for

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

For info, the GS who landed in New York in 1900 seems to have stayed there ... this is the birth of a child of his in 1908

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WC8-R64

welcome back.

This is as far as any of the helpers went .............. no-one is related to your husband's family, and we stop searching records when we don't get any response as we don't know whether or not we are finding the correct people.

Sorry have not been on the site for a long time.
But my husband grandfather died in 1948 when he was a baby (he was born 1947) Giuseppe married an Giovanna Nicolotti in 1907 that's as far as I got, it does sound like that are one of the same person, have you managed to get any further

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 17 Nov 2013 23:32

The reason I did not post all that info about Alice Castello earlier (just said it is between Turin and Milan) is that the person who emigrated to the USA in 1900 was born there but we really have no reason as yet to think that 'our' Giuseppe Salussoglia was. :-)

Giuseppe Salussolia died in 1948 in Marylebone for info.

I think I would cross fingers for there to be more info in the 1921 census because until then even knowing where to look in Italy for births is a problem. The fathers do not seem to have been in England if they were Antonio Nicolotti and Secondino Salussoglia ...

I do wonder whether Luigi Salussoglia in the 1911 household was a brother and so whether finding more info about him, possibly descendants, would lead to something. Unfortunately there were several people named Luigi Salus*lia in the vicinity in 1911 and there does not seem to be a death recorded for any of them. :-(

JoonieCloonie Report 17 Nov 2013 18:09

The reason why it has been asked a couple of times what the names of the fathers on the 1907 marriage certificate was is to see whether maybe they were in England too and possibly a census record would give a place of birth, or a death record would give an age, to help you with searching .........

And of course whether there is some real source for the birthplace 'Alice Castello' other than that emigration record for what seems to be a completely different person since there is no point in searching somewhere that may be entirely incorrect.

as one of the links given by patchem says http://www.italyfreebmd.org/
'The most important fact to remember about genealogical records in Italy is that records are kept at the town (Comune) level, with duplicate copies of these records being deposited in State Archive (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) of each province, located in the provincial capital.'
so you need to know where to look.

Possibly when the 1921 census is released it will show more specific birthplaces for the couple.

The Giuseppe Salussolia I am trying to find out about stayed in England as far as we know as their son secondo was born in 1909 and Ettore was born in 1912, their surname was misspelt on both their birth and marriage cert's (Salosolia) I was hoping someone would know or have a connection to a site that has births/Marriage/Death on for the italians.
All of my husbands older family have passed away so we have no one to turn to :-S

'Alice Costello is a Town in Northern Italy and the marriage of Giuseppe Salussoglia and Giovanna Nicolotti in 1907 is the Grandparents.
Thank you for your help'

Please answer in the thread Margaret so that everyone can see the information, use the 'Add your reply' box at the bottom.

I am afraid I am no more enlightened than I was before. I don't think the person who landed in New York in 1900 had anything to do with the people who married in London in 1907, but I may just not be seeing it.

So unless there is some connection between them, is there another source for Alice CAstello as the place of birth? (It is between Turin and Milan I see.)

Maybe you sent private messages to other people answering other questions? :-)

Best to put those answers here too, for instance on the 1907 marriage certificate what are the names of the father of the bride and groom and the other information on the certificate, if you have it (and if not you should get it!)
