Nicki - I don't think he did go to prison. There are quite a number of newspaper reports in the archives on FindMyPast. Haven't read them all yet but in the Hull Daily Mail of 06 September 1933 it implies that although the inquest had given a verdict of murder when it came to the police courts there may have been a change.

One extract:

"The possibility of an accident, however, could not be ruled out" (This after medical evidence stating considerable force would have been needed for the injuries sustained).

another:

"The magistrates held that there was not a prima facie case for committing Furr for trial for murder" (It does go on to say he was committed for trial on a coroner's warrant).

Will read some more ....

Shirley how do you know that marriage is the same Arthur F Furr ?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 3 Feb 2014 19:37

I think the man certainly had problems, in October 1932 he was charged with trying to obtain money (£10) by menace from a nurse. His defence stated he was desperate fro money to feed and clothe his wife and child.

This was in the Gloucester Citizen, Wednesday 19 October 1932

@MarieCeleste...Yes I have downloaded the newspaper articles but did wonder what the reports meant. Was he charged with murder and what about the coroners warrant? Also I wonder why the divorce took so long, 4years after Dorothy left him.
Digging into the depths of my memory I do recall my Dad telling me that Arthur was abit of a rogue, but then he also told me that Arthur had been in trouble for a sexual assault, but who knows, family history is like Chinese Whispers. :-0 :-0

As you were aware of the 'name change' it would have been helpful if you had mentioned it at the outset

Thank you to everyone who has come up with information on Arthurs ancestors, but what I really wanted to know was about the murder he committed, his sentence, and what happened to him afterwards. I know I can go down another route to find some answers so that is an avenue I will look into. The only problem I have is not wanting to upset living relatives, as they may not know what happened in 1933.
Onward and upwards I say......... :-S

I posted a long reply about my father (Hylie)Arthur Frank Farr. I don't see it here though. It will shed much light on the following years after the murder of his baby daughter. I will write again when I have the energy
Our lives were not happy with him .He caused much violence and abuse. I believe this is the same man that you are trying to find out about.
Eileen Farr.

I am a living relative of Arthur Frank Farr .His daughter Eileen. I will not hide or escape the truth and think that it's quite possible that he did kill his baby daughter
I am if course horrified to consider this but I kind ofalways knew there was a horrific dark secret all my life .

Welcome to genesreunited, Eileen.

If you want to try and contact Nicola, who started this query, you could click on her name and send her a message. Genes should then contact her about your email. She is possibly not monitoring this thread anymore as it is almost 3 years since she last posted on it.

She may have discovered other information from other sources that can help you.

Eileen,
Could you just confirm the name of your grandmother who died in 1951? Thank-you.

Hi Eileen,
I am Nicola who started the thread about Arthur Furr later known as Farr.
He was married to my Grandmother, Dorothy Cook. She later went on to marry my Grandfather Gordon Appleby.
My email address is [email protected] It would be lovely to hear from you. I have just paid for a months membership on here so we can chat.
I did not see the long message you say you posted on here, hopefully you can repost it very soon. I cant wait to hear what you have to tell me about him. Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards
Nicki Appleby :-)

Katherine Report 8 Jan 2017 18:12

My father's name was Arthur Frank Farr. I registered his death in October 1996
His birthday was March 22nd. His name had been Furr before he changed it to Farr. His first Christian name was Hylie. He was born in Hitchin Hertfordshire. He and my mother (Kathleen Phyllis Ground ) had two daughters. Christine Nora Farr 1944 -2003 and myself Eileen Kathleen Farr 1946.
My father was a violent man prone to sudden rages when he would hit my mother and use very bad language . I was always afraid and thought he might kill my mother
. So I kept alert day and night to protect her. My mother told me that among other attacks on Christine,he had closed the lid on a suitcase they used as a makeshift cot. because she was crying. Also she was black and blue with bruises after screaming for my mum. My mum took her to the hospital who did nothing to suggest that she had been beaten by Arthur . My mother was in a state of denial and would not admit that any of my father's behaviour was what lead to baby Christine's injuries .. Arthur was unpredictable and could kick k off any time. I have no doubt that he is the man who who attacked baby Moira in a violent rage and ultimately caused her death. I am full of sorrow. I always thought there was a dark secret in Arthurs' past , that he may have caused a death. He never talked about his previous life. I met my Grandmother a few times in Kingsbury. I didn't like her.she had no time for Arthur's two daughters , her grand children and seemed always to be cross. She died in about 19 54 .
I await your reply and hope this is of some help to you . I need to say that despite his rages and constant abuse Christine and I loved him and so did our mother. This very difficult for me although I will continue with our search for the truth .
