Bearing in mind that ages in 1841 were rounded, is this a possibility?

On the image, Thomas was a Labourer - and is not recorded as being deceased, but that may not necessarily be accurate, as it could be down to how the question about 'father' was worded.

You started your OP as follows:

I know, from his marriage to Maria Williams, that Charles' father was one Thomas Fry b. about 1804, probably in Wiltshire.

So, what was Thomas's occupation?
How old was Charles?
What was HIS occupation?

Marriages Sep 1859 (>99%)
Fry Charles Newport M 11a 230
Williams Maria Newport M 11a 230

Well, it shows how little time I've had for my searching, these last 6 years! Back to square one with Charles Fry as am unfortunately aware now that the one whose mother, Frances, married William Harris could not be MY ancestor. It all seemed to fit, except that one or two contacts thought he was connected to their Harris ancestors who had emigrated.

I have Frances to thank, or blame as she listed herself as a widow when William Harris was alive and kicking and later went out with her, their daughters and stepson Charles to the USA where they lived out their lives, marrying, having children and my ancestor definitely stayed in the UK! The chap born in 1824 seemed a good fit except for the age - widowed mum or more likely a gran, born in 1781 (or a bit later) and good few siblings, two of whom (Worthy b.1827 and John b. 1824) I found in Chepstow, listed as visitors along with a Jacob Fry b.1830 - maybe a cousin, who knows, at the home of a couple surnamed Powell.

The big issue is Hullavington, Wiltshire and a few Charles Frys of the same generation. I know, from later census records that that IS where MY Charles Fry was from but which of them, your guess is as good as mine! I am left with the mystery of HOW my taid could have been so certain that his family, my family, were NOT related to the Quaker chocolate-making Frys when I cannot go back beyond his grandfather, Charles. All I can hope is other descendants of Charles Fry and Maria Williams may have the answers that I don't and that one day we'll connect in here.

Hi Cynthia,
I think quite a few of the branches of my dad's family did just that so possibly some of the Rickards listed in Hindley/Aspull were relatives. It's difficult because I can't find John Rickards' birth - for the reason, I'm assuming, that he was either John Thomas (father Thomas Thomas on marriage lines) or registered in mother's name, which I don't have - unless, of course, it was Rickards and she never married Thomas Thomas!! No joy with census as I can find him only as an adult, with wife and family - and even that isn't easy with transcribers taking the old-fashioned 'k' for an 'h' to make Richards! Wouldn't be half so much fun if it was too easy, would it? :-D

If you check http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html Susan, you will see that there are pockets of Rickards in the Lancashire area.

There were Rickards in the Aspull/Hindley area before the marriage of Charles and Elizabeth - I wonder if they moved to be with family in the area?
