DO come back as soon as you can Eunice and get as much info as possible.

Find out everything you can about this person's parents and family members.

It is good to have something challenging to research.

from Jack and Christine to all of you wonderful researchers: Thanx so much. This is definitely him. He lived in Whalley old road . He is on family census as John William. Jack's mum has never been able to remember an uncle john and the family never spoke of one. No wonder if he was nicknamed Solomon. I also had found his wife to be Eliza Tomlinson and j's mum said the money went to her family when she died. It all fits perfectly. Thanx so much for solving these mysteries. It' s wonderful. Will you please thank all the people who helped. We're so grateful. I'm sure a 94 yr old will be ecstatic too at now knowing the whole story. Thanx and best wishes to all of you.

Thanks for the update Eunice - a sad story about the suicide, but he was obviously in a lot of pain.

Pleased that we were able to help solve a mystery - Dea's newspaper find was the key.

Thanks for the update Eunice - nice to have been of help :-)

One thing still puzzles me though........

"Richard Grundy's wife Alice mat have passed away and he subsequently married Margaret Daniels? "

Does this mean you are still thinking that 'your' Solomon was the son of Richard and Margaret because I don't believe he is.

'That' Solomon is clearly down as Solomon through all the census and his birth is confirmed to them in 1880 in Wigan:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1880
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Solomon Pemberton Wigan & Leigh DANIEL PEM/42/261

Also - who is the 'Alice' who was mentioned?

I will pass your comments on Dea, I really don't know. It is a family search for some friends - I think I have got as far as I am going to get with my own lot!- but it has been interesting helping them. Jacks dad went back to canada during WW2 and never heard from him again. With some research of my own, plus help from wonderful people like yourself on GrU, we were able to discover that Jack has three half brothers in Canada!!!! Best of all, he is flying out there in2 weeks to meet them all for the first time! I / we are so grateful to people like yourselves who are so generous with your time and knowledge. I will pass on your enquiry later ( am currently at royal Preston hospital waiting for hubby who has come for a scan!)
Thanks again to everyone, albeit a sad outcome for Solomon xx

Hope the scan goes well Eunice and the trip to Canada sounds really exciting !

I am sure it will be great for him to meet his half brothers and I hope they all get on well.

That looks about right to me Maryb.

I found all the birth reg's to confirm mmn on LancsBMD but not John Williams:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1868
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Jeffrey Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/131/37
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1870

GRUNDY Sarah Alice Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/143/1

Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Margaret Ann Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/151/47

Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Richard Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/160/72
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1878
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY George Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/194/50
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1880
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY Ellen Blackburn Blackburn ALLEN B/210/35
Total records matching : 6.

However, this was the birth I thought matched but there was no marriage for a Grundy/Hallam:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1875
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
GRUNDY John William Blackburn Blackburn HALLAM B/175/30

Looks like a clear case of someone trying to sound 'posh' and putting their H's were there 'hare' non !! (as my gran used to say ;-) :-D )

Chris says Thank you BUT can any of you geniuses out there help her with the next bit please? Thanx for that info. It ties up with what I already have. But can u ferret out Margaret allen's original family. Her father was William Allen on wedding certificate, but I can' t find Margaret Allen born in Blackburn with a family of allen's. This means I can't find her mums / siblings names and can't delve further back Thanx in anticipation Chris xx
