Hannah Jane Parratt was born in Brighton in August 1884 and died in Eastbourne in Feb 1970.

She was married to Herbert Ebenezer Grayling ( I believe this was his second marriage ) who died in 1942 before I was born.

Hannah had 3 children - Archie, Bert and Irene.

If you look at the 1901 census, Hannah ( aged 16 ) was working below stairs in Montpelier Road, Brighton

Welcome to genesreunited, Les.

Unfortunately Jayne is no longer a member (if you click on her name you will see that no email contact is possible) so it is unlikely that she will see your posting.

To satisfy my curiosity - what was Hannah's surname?

Added:
Parratt?

Hi Jayne

Looking at your question re Archie Grayling - although it is 2 years old are you still looking for info ?

He was my uncle, lived in Eastbourne and he had a sister, Irene ( my mother ) and a brother Herbert who lived in London

Does this help

Margee
It came across as being rude .. I am sorry if you got upset over but I got upset thinking I had committed a major crime instead of asking a question about a birth certificate..I WASNT aware that I had to put it all on the same thread . So apologies for that .

Ty Sylvia for your reply

I full understand all this now but I haven't made anyone look foolish .. Like I said I would have appreciated it better it I was pointed in the right direction instead of being told I have made everyone look foolish ...It doesn't inspire me with confidence to ask any further questions ..

But thank you Sylvia to take the time to explain this to me .. I wlll bear this in mind in the future and I will check everything I put up .

Thank you, Sylvia. I was rather upset by Jayne's comments. I don't think I have ever been accused of being rude before.

Jayne

Margee was not being rude ...........

........ most of us do tell people who post two or more threads on the same person that it is actually against the T&C's of GR ............... and the problem is that it wastes time

and we do it out in the open on the thread, with an explanation of why it is a poor thing to do.

IF Margee had sent you a pm (private message), then someone else would have been bound to say it on the thread ......................

So the best move is to get his birth certificate (it usually is the best idea).

Take your time and get all the information that is out there.

If you look at Archie's birth on the index on freebmd, it looks like this.

Births Sep 1910
GRAYLING Archie ......Eastbourne 2b 70

but with the same page reference there is also.........

CURCHER Archie .....Eastbourne 2b 70

This might indicate that his parents were not married, but his father was at the birth registration and acknowledged his son.

It was not unusual for people to present themselves as married though at census, even if there had been no marriage.

So...
Archie's mother may have been Hannah CURCHER, but whether or not that was her birth name needs further investigation.

I can find a grayland but not a grayling .Beverley w , the family name of my grandfather was grayling but like you say it shows graylands ..

Margee first of all I didn't know I ahd to post all on the same thread AS I HAVE SAID I am brand new to this. so yes ill take constructive criticism and advice but please do not be rude I haven't been rude to you . If you felt I had made a mistake then why be rude and mention it I front of all and sundry why noit just inbox me and say Jayne you need to do this or that , AND no wAy am I making you look foolish as I can see you only answered this to be nasty.. if THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT BRAND NEW PEOPLE THEN NO WONDER PEOPLE DONT BOTHER , WOULDNT IT BE BETTER TO POINT OUT that there is another thread and all my comments should be on that one ..

Safc . I am not aware of Herbert Grayling sorry but thank you it might come up somewhere who he is

I APOLOGISE to anyone who thinks I have been making them foolish it was never intended to that . I am on my first 10 hours here and I am learning I don't need to be given grief

Jayne, why on earth would you start a new thread on the same family just hours after your previous thread? As you can see we just repeated what had already been found, making us look foolish.

The only way that you can see the birth cert is by buying a copy of it, which will cost £9.25 from the GRO

Is this connected to your other Grayling thread?
