Trying to find some information on Emily. I know she was baptised 20.6.1841 Acrise Kent to parents Thomas & Hester Gilham. Would it be possible to check the 1851 census and a possible marriage please. I think it is possible she married a James Bailey of Wootton but not sure.
Thank you Julia

In fact, it was not "an error in transcription", the entries on the image are only initials, so "seatwell1 must have known the names.

just realised ...................... you said the father was Thomas

and the above 2 records are Henry

I'll leave them for the time being, while I search again :-)

Hi Sylvia, I am not 100% sure of the father's name, I went on Family Search and it said Thomas & Hester Gilham and that was all that I managed but it did say they were born Acrise Kent. Well you have got Esther there but with regard to Henry I am not sure.
Have taken what you have on board and will wait to hear from you again, thank you in the meantime.

it's all a bit strange

I'm using ancestry

Ancestry has the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538 - 1975 .......... which is the same as is on familysearch

and there are Thomas / Hester and Henry / Esther

BUT I have not so far found Thomas / Hester on the censuses

Just look at this mix of christenings ..........

Jane Gilham b. 19 Sep 1847 (no baptism shown) Thomas, Hester Gilham

Jane Gilham christened 19 Sep 1847 Acrise, Kent, England Thomas, Hester (think this is the same as the one above)

Hester Gilham christened 12 Mar 1843 Acrise, Kent, England Thomas, Hester

Henry William Gilham christened 15 Jul 1832 Elmstone, Kent, England Henry, Esther

Emily Eliza Gilham christened 20 Jun 1841 Acrise, Kent, England Thomas, Hester

Hester Jane Gilham christened 2 Nov 1834 Acrise, Kent, England Henry, Hester

Susannah Gilham christened 26 Feb 1837 Acrise, Kent, England Thomas, Hester

James Gilham christened 8 Jun 1845 Acrise, Kent, England Thomas, Hester

Wow that sounds strange doesn't it. I Might have to look up marriages for them both but will have to do that tomorrow as I have to close now I'm afraid. I live in Oz and my hubby has called me for dinner bless him.
Will get back to you tomorrow

Emily Eliza is on several trees on ancestry ...................... either with parents Henry and Esther or parents unknown

She seems to have married twice ............... first to James Henry Bailey in 1860, in Acrise. He seems to have died in1869, and she then married William R Hood in 1874

.............. OK

and I am about to close down and go to bed!!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Nov 2014 07:06

3 of the children christened and shown with father Thomas and mother Hester, can be found on the censuses with father Henry and mother Esther

these are Jane, Emily Eliza and Susannah

I cannot see James on the 1851 Census, unless he is the J Gilham age 5 with Henry and Esther, but he is on the 1861 already working away form home as a Servant

of course Hester / Esther are almost interchangeable ........................... unless Thomas is really Thomas Henry ????????????????

there may well be 2 families .................... but I can't see how!

Back now after a good nights sleep. As you say maybe Thomas & Henry are the same person, it does seem strange With regard to Emily & James Bailey do you know if they had any children in the ten years they were married? Also the 1861 Census of them both would be appreciated. I am now going to peruse all you have given me and put it in order in my mind.

I wonder if the enumerator mis-heard Shadrach, and decided it was Frederick??????

it is a very biblical name, but possibly not that common
