Quick update I've managed to contact a couple of relatives and will be meeting up with them soon and hope to have photographs & certificates
I've updated the Ancestry FT with what I have (thanks to you lot)
Not been well for last few weeks but now getting back into it
Will let you know if & when I get more stuff to put up on his profile
Once again many thanks to everyone for the help.

Thanks guys...
Guess it will take me a little while to go through all of this stuff (more garnered in a day than in previous 8 months of looking!)
I've added the bits I had plus the union & railway company details as docs
Plus this morning I received both James & Elizabeth's death certificates Which gives me more info on my relatives who moved to Bristol (uncles & aunt) So perhaps I can find someone to chat to at last! Fingers crossed...

Gritty, could the two children who died be the first two Williams? Not sure about the James in the 1891 and 1901. Mary seems to be in Ireland with William in 1901, so couldn't be the Mary in Scotland in 1891. Shame we can't find James's original service record but I would guess he was in South Africa in the Boer War.

Going back to brother Thomas, this is the only one I can find in the Irish 1901 census:

Residents of a house 3 in Bunlougher (Deerpark, Fermanagh)

McSorley Wm 60 Male Head of Family Church of Ireland
McSorley Mary 54 Female Wife Church of Ireland
McSorley John 27 Male Son Church of Ireland
McSorley Thos 16 Male Son Church of Ireland
McSorley Martha 11 Female Daughter Church of Ireland

William's occupation is given as Caretaker but he could have retired from sailmaking.

No problem gritty If you could see all the blind alleys I've looked up!!!
And of course he may have had a reason for choosing Ivor that remains a mystery still!
If of course it is the same 'James' that is
I will have to have another look on Ancestry using some of this latest info Phewth

Gritty

Gritty Report 7 Dec 2014 14:07

think it is correct, I'm guessing James Robert McSorely names his first child William Irvine

I am wondering about this one:

1891 Scotland Census
James McSorley
Age:13
Estimatd Birth Year:abt 1878
Relationship:Step Child
Mother's name:Margaret Burns
Where born:Ireland
Registration Number:575
Registration district:Renfrew
Civil Parish:Renfrew
Town:Renfrew
County:Renfrewshire
Address:6 Newton St
Occupation:Scholar

James Burns 35 b Ireland
Margaret Burns 34 b Ireland
John Burns 1 b Renfrew
Theresa McSorley 6 b Renfrew
James McSorley 13 b Ireland
Patrick Millmore 56 lodger. b Ireland

On the marriage cert William is shown as deceased and there is a death for a William McSorley in Renfrewshire in 1889 but I can't find a marriage for James & Margaret. There is a birth on scotlandspeople for Theresa perhaps her birth reg could help.
