Hi Everyone
I now have the birth certs for both Mary born Nantwich and Mary Elizabeth born Witton, which is Northwich where most of the family lived.
Mary Nantwich b.1856 f.Thomas m.Sarah Williams f.occ. Jobbing Labourer.
Mary Elizabeth Witton b. 1860 f.Thomas m.Catherine Clark f.occ. General Labourer.
To just re-cap: Would you say it is safe to say that Mary lied about her age on her marriage cert. and also dropped her middle name because she was well under age ie 15 at the time. William was definitely 19 as I have his birth cert. and although they would have been living in the Northwich area William had relations in the Oldham area and so because of the circumstances they married in Chorlton. Mary has given diff. d.o.b. on each census but on one she does state 1860 and also her age at death in 1930 states 70yrs which again makes d.o.b. 1860. Apart from this, nowhere can I find any mention again of a Mary Elizabeth Foxley, other than on the 1871 census.
Hope all this makes sense.
Looking forward to any replies. :-)

No you are not missing anything. They do both have a father named Thomas.Just to clarify at the moment: 1861 Mary (if she is the right one - mother Sarah Williams) was 15 and a living-in servant with a family in Baddiley, Nantwich. While Thomas was already married to Catherine and living in Northwich (if he is the right father). As we have discovered (if he is the same Thomas who married Sarah) there is some query over the dates. There are a lot of 'ifs' so maybe the only way is to buy a few certs. I am doubtful about the Mary whose mother is Sarah, I shall just have to work my way through but I value your comments in the meantime.

Eh! Am I missing something? Had we not established that both Mary and Mary Elizabeth both had a father named Thomas?

Do we have any addresses to identify the correct Thomas?

I still think that the Mary that married William Senior is the Mary Elizabeth. What do the other helpers think please?

But even with that birth certificate showing her to be the daughter of Thomas & Sarah how does that prove that she's the one who married Mr. Senior?

Hi everyone. Just to update as you were all so helpful. I have just found the baptism for Mary Foxley b. 1856 Nantwich. It gives mother's name as Sarah so birth cert. is on the way. :-D

I agree Chris, I would certainly be buying the birth certificate for Mary Elizabeth Foxley and I would probably buy that Mary Senior death certificate.

The more that I look at this the more I think that Mary lied about her age when she married William.

Yes, 1898 Will from Ancestry Shirley, and yes, different Thomas.

As a Non User of Genes Records, I'm not sure what you mean (quote)...

The wills are on Genes click on the side panel when in census

Chris :)

(think things getting confusing!, perhaps get that 1860 Birth Cert.)

Rootgatherer: Mary gave Thomas Foxley as father on marriage cert and Labourer.
I found the same death also but think it may be a different Thomas?

Chris Ho: I found that one too, but 'think' it is a different Thomas as there is also a1898 Will for him?

For what it's worth, I think Mary lied about her age when she married William. I think she was 16 or 17 not 19.

I wonder if both were under 21 when they married and neither was honest about their age. Or had they just forgotten what their ages were by 1901.

What name and occupation did she give for her father on the marriage certificate please? Did it say he was deceased? Did it give an address for Mary or her husband please?

Just found the will of a Thomas Foxley of Baddiley, Nantwich dated 1848/9 which seems to fit re: the names of his children. Could someone have a look and give your opinion please? Sorry, I do not know how to transfer to here.

I said I needed help didn't I? It's just as well you all seem to know what you are doing. You have made things a lot clearer and helped me to think 'outside the box',
Will let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

That is true.

Shirley's original post stated that Catherine was the widowed mother, and I guess we assumed that she had reason to say that
