John Report 5 Mar 2015 15:15

Hello Rose.. I have received the information from the RC Care home re Mary Teresa Moore, She went into the mother and babies home in Leeds in November 1924 , states about 20 yrs old and parents unknown, she had her daughter in Jan 1925 but wasn't released from the maternity hospital Leeds until March 1925 because she had an attack of Muscular rheumatism on first getting up, She was sent back to the mother and babies home with her baby where she remained until February 1926 from there they were sent to St Veronicas in Sheffield . It also stated on the report the name of the father who lived in Boston Spa he was RC and that he married another girl in Dec 1924, just one month before her baby was born. Her employer in Boston Spa where she worked as a Domestic Servant before giving birth stated that she was liked by them all and had an excellent character reference. When she left the RC mother and baby home they said the baby was walking and talking and full of life and that MTM was a very capable girl, has behaved well, she is not at all strong. What a sad life she must have had. Seeing no parents stated I still believe it was her in the Manchester Workhouse in 1904-1906 with her mother Peggy and then in Holly mount in 1911 age 6 yrs old. So Rose I seem no further in finding out exactly who she is. At least the out come through no fault of her own she sounded like a very nice girl, she is one of those who had a raw deal in life.. If I could have found who the person was living in Hulme who knew her mother in 1904 perhaps I may have found a connection
Thank you for all your help. John

I suppose Brian might not want to know about his birth Mother but as you said he will find the post if he wants to

I wouldn't delete it, if Brian does look...(and bearing in mind his age, he may not even know or want to know anything about his birth family) if he does look and contact you you can tell him then what you have found out.

Rose. I have just goggled Mary Teresa Moore and it came up on a post I put on under Mary Teresa Moore in 2013 when I thought she was a member of the families daughter My great gran was a Moore. Do I delete that one out now that I know for sure after the DNA last month verified she was no relation to me. Regards J

Won't really matter too much John, because if he googles the name it will come up as your thread from 2013 with Mary's name in the title... but yes you could change the title to Mary Teresa Moore... it won't hurt.

John Report 27 Feb 2015 22:33

Sorry about that Rose. The heading is Hiram Moore he wouldn't think of looking under him for Mary Teresa Moore, I am unsure now if that is the father of the mother of Mary Teresa Moore. Should the heading be left or altered to Mary Teresa Moore

ah right, I did wonder.

I notice you have put a search on FLR board for Brian, it's better to add it here, and keep all the info together, if he googles his birth mother's name this thread will then come up... otherwise helpers on here will duplicate info.
:-)

Rose.. The post was sent in by me, because I am logged in under my husbands name on here it is easier to answer in his name than trying to explain every time to everyone who I am. Regards. Josephine.

Rose. It said on the death cert an inquest was held on 22/12/1970. I moved from Sheffield in 1955 and now live in Kent so have to rely on the internet

Hello John, well a little further forward then. I am not sure that you would be able to find details on Mary's time at Middlewood, I imagine those would only be available to next of kin? there is info for records held in Sheffield at

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/rd/8fe6cdc8-fac0-4f83-a822-6b2aad0b46c9

I wonder if there was an inquest into her death though given the circumstances? That would be worth looking at if you can get to the library to look at old newpapers maybe.

Hello Rose, Received the Death certificate of Mary Theresa Moore this morning and it verifies what I was always given to understand. She died in Middlewood Hospital Sheffield (also known as an Asylum) in 1970, birth unknown, unmarried. A tragic death Shock due to multiple scalds, misadventure. How very sad. If born around 1903' then she must have been 67 yrs old. I also received the birth for a son Brian Moore b1934 Sheffield father unknown Mary Teresa Moore was stated as being a Domestic servant same profession as stated on her daughters birth cert in 1925. So far all this ties up , so it looks like Mary was admitted into Middlewood in 1934 . Can you give me any tips how I can find out about her stay in Middlewood, and an admission date. Still awaiting about the birth of daughter from the RC Care homes with hopefully a next of kin for Mary. Will let you know the result Regards John

I don't think it's particularly unusual for families to take in an unrelated child, it may just have been prompted by compassion, knowing that the alternative would not have been so good?

I think you will have to wait though and see if the searches come up with anything new.

Perhaps this MTM b 1907 is a possibility and when she got pregnant the family disowned her. Seems so odd that my family took a complete strangers daughter in and surprised that the authorities didn't take her after Mary Teresa Moore went into the Institution.

Presume I will just have to wait until I hear back from the searches I am having done. I found the Mary Seresa Moore being in Holly Mount RC school, which makes me think it could be her. She had her daughter in 1925 in Leeds at 18 Clarenden Road which I found was a RC home for mothers and babies she was still there 3 months later when she registered her. It also gave a residential address for her as Church Street Boston Spa, Domestic servant. I know there was a RC Home in Church Street Boston Spa and wondered if when it was time to leave Holly Mount she was found a position there.. The girls who were in the Manchester Workhouse were sent to Holly Mount and Mary Teresa (looked at the original at certainly looks like a Teresa ) she was 6yrs old.
I wonder about the Mary Teresa Moore b 1906 Bolton, could her parents have nothing to do with her when she was expecting, I know she was put into an Institution when she had her son and then that's when my family took her in (we lived in Sheffield) Always thought she was family but last month after taking a DNA
I found no relation to my family at all. Question now why did my family take a child in that is no relation to us in the 30's unless she lived in our street. Feel knocking my head against a brick wall
