More information please. Where can I find if any of the siblings of Mary Ann Moore were in the Prescott Union Workhouse, after 1881 , because I found Mary Ann Moore was in there in 1885, the authorities from there applied for her to go to St Johns deaf &dumb school Boston Spa, by then her father John Moore was in America. Have been unable to find any of her siblings so wondered if they were inmates of the workhouse also

To every one who has helped me in the past months I would like to say a big thank you. I received a phone call today from St John's Deaf and Dumb school in Boston Spa Yorkshire with proof that Mary Ann Moore who was a pupil at the school was attending there at the same time as Mrs Hawcroft ( nee Elizabeth Murphy also known as Lilly Murphy) who was stated as her friend on the Manchester Workhouse records in 1904. Mary Ann Moore and Lilly Murphy 's names were on the same page in the schools record books and it stated Lilly Murphy came from Manchester, hence more or less they became friends from being at the Deaf and dumb school together. Feel for sure now that I have found the Mary Ann Moore who I want. Have got there in the end. Mary Ann Moores father went to America to live while she was in St John's but have been unable to trace him and the family.

An update for everyone so you know exactly , where I am at, at the moment. I have eliminated Mary Ann Moore as being connected to Hiram Moore, Hulme also Robert John Moore Manchester and now looking at her being the daughter of John and Mary Jane Moore from Llanasa Flintshire Wales. 1881 in St Helens with father and stepmother. She was in the St John's deaf and dumb school Clifford, Boston Spa Yks in the 1891 age 19 pupil and 1911 age 29 down as Laundry Maid.. The connection as to think it may be her is that Mrs Hawcroft her friend as stated on the 1904 Workhouse records was also being deaf and dumb, in 1891 she was also in Boston Spa down as "Lilly " Murphey training to be a tailoress, hence where they must have known each other from. Mary Ann ,mad a younger sister named Mary Teresa must be why she named her own daughter Mary Ann. Obviously it's difficult to prove this is the one I want but there are too many coincidences. At the present moment I am awaiting a phone call from St Johns Boston Spa to see if they have any more information about Mary Ann other than what's on the census. Another coincidence that Mary Teresa Moore , Mary Anns daughter was working in Church Street Boston Spa, in 1924, going there from Holly Mount convent school Tottington, Lancs. St John's is in Church Street Boston Spa. Could she have been sent there from Holly Mount to learn a trade, unsure if Mary Teresa was deaf and dumb but she was not a well girl ,had muscular rheumatism, I will keep you updated and with fingers crossed I may at last, found my Mary Ann Moore

I do believe Mary Ann Moore has been found with the help from 2 kind gents on the Yorkshire Indexers. In 1891 and 1901 she was in St John's deaf and dumbe institute Clifford, Wetherby Yks. States born 1872 Holywell Flintshire. Occupation Laundrymaid. This seems to tie up with Elizabeth Hawrcoft nee Murphey ( known as Lilly Murphey) who was in St John's deaf and dumb school Boston Spa also D &D in 1891 and was her friend stated on record when Polly(Mary Ann) Moore was admitted to the Manchester workhouse with her daughter Mary Teresa Moore in 1904. In the 1911 census Mary Ann Moore in the workhouse stated her occ former laundress and deaf and dumb dice 4yrs old. Mary Ann Moore b 1872 Holywell , parents John and Mary Jane Moore and in the 1881 census living innSt Helens, but her own mother had died in 1878. Another point of interest she had a sister Mary Teresa D Moore b 1874 , is this why she called her daughter Mary Teresa . After this 1881 census with her recorded on it there is no sighting of her family after that ,, so a few more sets of eyes would be appreciated to help find them. Presume at some time after 1901 is when Mary Ann Moore went to Manchester to meet up with her friend Elizabeth / Lilly and fell pregnant, obviously she had no family to fall back on ,fell on poor times and had no alternative put go in the workhouse.

Completely at a standstill and just don 't know where to look for Mary Ann anymore. Where could she have been from 1871 until 1903. It states she was deaf and dumb but have not found one listed on any census of a Mary Ann Moore, and being deaf and dumb. I have a birth certificate for Mary Ann Moore b Manchester 1870 but that is no proof now that I have the right one. So frustrated

I don't think the workhouse records are for the Mary Ann Moore I want because I paid to look at the 1878 and it states Mary Ann Moore age 23 yrs with a Louise age 4, so its an older Mary Ann Moore. Looked up another one Mary Moore in workhouse and in 1891 was 61 yrs old so presume all the others listed are either one of these 2.

Dea I went on to living relatives for Robert John Moore and Det ec tive has found a great deal , the conclusion is that all the family are extinct because no children from his children's marriages. However there is via Mary Ann Moore the daughter left behind, her granddaughter went out to California in 1947 and got married so there are living family back in the USA, how ironic. I am a cousin of her, living in England so desperate to find all I can for my relatives out there who know nothing about their ancestors

Hi Dea. being a novice on the workings of this site I just don't know how to get it all together and sorry that I posted on different headings. Is it possible for you to do it for me or must I do it. Would like to say how grateful I am for all the help everyone has given me..Finding everything I have so far about the Moores has proved very tragic .

Thank you Yvonne. It gives no age for her but if definitely her then she must have been only 7 to 9 yrs old. I found her father Robert John Moore last night on Family Search and it looks like the family were in Massachusetts in 1875. What seems to be going through my mind was she mistreated by her father who was a policeman, maybe hit around the head causing her to go deaf and dumb at the age of 4 yrs old and the parents fled to America taking their other daughter and Robert took on a new career as Shoemaker. To leave a young child alone and end up in a workhouse for most of her life is beyond me. Take a look for Mary Ann in the 1911 census, she was in a Manchester workhouse then. She had a daughter in 1903 that was taken away from her when she was about 3 to 4 yrs old and put into a RC convent home. I may be wrong in my thoughts but looking at what I have found she was certainly left behind in Manchester, and no sighting for 30 yrs . I sent for the birth certificate of Mary Ann's daughter and she was born in a house that belonged to her employer so for that period she was not in a workhouse but certainly was in 1904. I may possibly have to write to the Manchester archieves to see if I can find more information. If you find anything else I would appreciate it

More help please if possible. I have now received a birth certificate for Mary Ann Moore born 1870 , she was the daughter of Robert John and Mary Moore living in Blackley Manchester dist. I have found her on the 1871 census and then nothing for 30 years when I found her in a Manchester workhouse. I was unable to find her parents on any census after that finally find the family living in Massachusetts but Mary Ann was not with them so presume she was left behind in England. On the 1911 census I found her in a Manchester workhouse and it states she was deaf and dumb from age of 4 yrs so probably this may be why she didn't go to America. It did state on the 1880 Massachusetts census that Robert John was a shoemaker yet when in England and on Mary Ann's birth certificate he was a Policeman, I find this odd.. I would appreciate it if anyone could have any ideas as to the lost 30 years of Mary Ann, I seem unable to find her

Hi John I think I would copy anything relevant from here on to the other thread and keep it all together there really...then if you add any more info it's all in one place :-) You could edit the title there to say 'ongoing' or 'still looking' something like that?

Yvonne I presume the Hiram Moore thread but seeing you have sent me the Teresa Moore post of her being in the same Holly Mount convent in 1901 as my Mary Teresa Moore 10 yrs later in 1911 , do you think there could be a connection. When I got the report on Mary Teresa Moore from the RC Care in Leeds it stated that the parents of Mary Teresa Moore. - unknown and she was 20 yrs old in 1925. That's why I thought it could be Mary Teresa Moore b 1903 in the Manchester workhouse with mother Polly (Mary A) Moore. but you have put a new twist on it with finding Teresa Moore
