Jean Report 8 Oct 2015 17:40

Just found the death for Mary Greenan nee Smith on Scotlandspeople.

She died 28/2/1885 in the district of Partick, aged 60. Her usual address was 74, Anderson Street.

Widow of Bernard Greenan.

Parents were James Smith, farm labourer and Jane m.s. McMahon .
Her daughter Sarah signed the certificate, but I couldn't make out her married name , looks like McCluskey but not too sure.

Sorry have not been able to reply sooner .
Thank you all very much for your help.

ArgylleGran, I am so sorry about not putting Patrick's mothers name up, I thought I had along with his fathers name , Thank you also for Bernard's death cert information, I have not long started looking for the Greenan side of the family so all this information is fantastic .

I am just going through everything you all have found, it's all much appreciated.

I've searched on SP for all deaths of a Mary (not specifying surname) in Kelvin in 1885 - and there's no sign of any surname remotely like Greenan.

GlasgowLass Report 8 Oct 2015 16:06

A tree on Ancestry shows the death of Mary Greenan MS Smith as 28 Jan 1885. Registered in Kelvin.
Her mother was also a McMahon

Greenan/Smith Marriage date on this tree says 11 Jun 1836 in Co Monaghan
( probably found on the birth cert for one of the children born 1855 onwards)

1855 certs provide a wealth of info and expect it was found on BC for Catherine Greenan b 28 Apr 1855)

Tree follows son Owen and his descendants

This looks like the son Owen in 1871 - he was a mason in 1861.
Can't see his marriage, however:

I can only see the death of Mary Quinn (in 1906, in Kelvin, Glasgow) - no sign of Mary Smith's death, at least not in Scotland.

Her Bernard was a seaman. After he died she married Edward Farmer, spirit merchant. Informant was her nephew James Hendry - presumably one of the Henry family in the 1851 census posted by GlasgowLass.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Oct 2015 11:16

Bernard's death cert only names Mary Smith as a wife.

Informant: James Greenan, son, 30 Wilson St., Partick.
Cause of death: fracture of leg, and shock.
Father: James Greenan, flesher, deceased.
Mother: Sarah Greenan, ms McMahon, deceased.

1877 GREENAN BERNARD
M 63 KELVIN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/09 0142

So the 1851 and 1861 posted by Mike are the correct family, as Jean has said, but the Quinn / Queen marriage is not, as GlasgowLass thought.

Perhaps Bernard Greenan and Mary Smith married in Ireland.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Oct 2015 11:03

Used some SP credits to look at Patrick's marriage record (though Jean already has this, and could tell us herself!).

Father: Bernard Greenan, mason's labourer.
Mother: Mary Greenan nee Smith

No Greenan / Smith marriage shows on SP.

GlasgowLass Report 8 Oct 2015 09:25

I am not sure that the 1851 & 1861 censuses i refer to the couple who married in 1846.
They married in the Gorbals.
I think this is the bride, Mary Queen/Quinn at 1851 with her son and her parents

Patrick Greenan
Age: 3
Estimated birth year: abt 1848
Relationship: Son
Mother: Mary Greenan
Gender: Male
Where born: Govan, Lanark

Potential matching RC baptisms in Glasgow for the other family.
( Scotland's People)
Baptisms in St Andrews which is on Clyde St for children named Bernard and Sarah.
Father Bernard. Mother: Mary
Mother's name does not match with Queen / Quin or any variant.
Edit: Mothers name :Mary SMITH

EDIT:
OP states Patrick married in 1870, at the same address showing on 1861 census therefore his mother's name should be listed on the cert?

Jean - FYI
http://www.freecen.org.uk/
has all of Lanark for 1841/51 and most of Renfrew for 1841 (90%) & 1851 (78%), but nothing for these two counties for 1861 on.

rootgatherer Report 7 Oct 2015 23:58

Mike, civil registration didn't start until 1855 in Scotland so only a parish record would be available.

If Bernard died in Scotland, his death registration would name all spouses including their maiden surnames if the informant knew the details.

Jean Report 7 Oct 2015 21:01

You might be right there going by the ages for James and Owen on the 1861 census, james born 1838 and Owen 1843 .
Can I ask where did you find their marriage Mike.?
