Hi Austin, Thanks for your reply and advise re subscriptions. I am torn, I always got on well with Ancestry London Voters but there are some adverse comments about them blocking some of it and wanting premium membership - and your own experience on FMP makes me think - "If in doubt - Leave it out!" Once I get the birth cert next week I will see what address it gives. Enjoy the nice weather.

Jen
PS Not meaning to pry re your Nan. Must be frustrating for you and your family not knowing.

I think ordering the certificate is a good move- and even if it doesn't answer any questions, at least it's another stone turned and a loose end tied up.

Find my Past states it has England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932 but I've no idea how to search them! I tried putting in Henry Bass Camberwell, and no results were returned. Perhaps someone else may be able to advise?

If you do decide to get Find my Past (which also has access to Newspaper archives) look out for promotional codes/ discounts before buying- sometimes you can get 20% off by looking around. The same for Ancestry- sometimes you can find deals to get 3 months for the price of 1.

There is no thread re my Nan on here- and I'll not give any details at the moment as I'm not really ready to return to my tree- it is so time consuming! May be in the winter I'll have another crack!

Apologies again about stating about that article- I must've got you excited for nothing. I did double check and it was for another family that I'd posted about. :-(

Hi Austin/Joonie. I have just ordered a birth certificate for Irene Bass to see what address is given. To do a thorough job on this I need to join either FMP or Ancestry. Can't afford both. I like the London Voters part of Ancestry. Do you now if FMP has that now? The next step with the 1939 listings is to search for all the Marys who lied about their age and knocked a couple of years off - So 9 August 1889 or 1890.
Austin - re your Nan.What year did she disappear and in what area? Is there a thread on here about her that I could read please.

The Bass/Wass baby Irene was born in 1914 and died when she was two. WW1 was going on at the time. Henry Frederick only appeared in Philip Road Camberwell in 1920 and Lilian appeared there in 1924 and they were childless from then on. I am tempted to spend on a birth cert for that baby! And round and round we go - and none of it really matters does it? An addiction without doubt.

Now you come to mention it - it is strange that the Ann Mary Bass in those few years in the 30's was there after Henry had got Lilian Wass. Maybe I should investigate that person? She must have been at least 21 to be on the electoral register. Could she be a daughter from Mary Ann (1888).? :-)

Hmmm, Jennifer- I think I may have got this mixed up with another family I've been working on- I had (in my head) that there was a small snippet that I spotted in the paper that absolved Henry of his wife's future debts- However, I can't find it now and think it may have been connected to another family- my apologies Jennifer.

I will double check tomorrow

Hi Austin, Can you tell me about the newspaper article you say Henry placed. The one earlier in this thread is not about my Henry & Mary as they married in Stepney in December 1907 and appeared on the 1911 census as childless after three years of marriage. Roll on 2021 and hope I still have my marbles by then. I can see from your last posting that I am not the only person with a conundrum.
Thanks again and regards

Jennifer

AustinQ Report 22 Aug 2016 17:36

I don't want to dampen things, but I don't think it was his wife Mary on the electoral register- why would she return after he'd been living with another woman and had a child with her?

I would've got the birth certificate of the child first to confirm that he was the father and to see what address they were living at.

It's obvious from the newspaper article that Mary and Henry were having problems before the 1911 census. Mary could've completely changed her name, married, travelled abroad, died. So much could've happened between 1911 and the 1939 register that I doubt you will find her. Even if she is there, many peoples dates of birth are out by a year or two, so the possibles are massive. Perhaps the 1921 census (if it ever arrives) will help!?

I have a hole in my tree too, as my Nan disappeared (apparently ran off with a doctor), My grandad placed an ad in the paper (similar to Henrys) saying he would be no longer responsible for her debts. Looking into her family history, she'd had a fairly sad life and the whole family (especially the women) had a history of alcohol abuse (and suicide). I presume that's why my Grandad wouldn't support her anymore (perhaps a drinking problem)- but I'll never know for sure. I do keep looking every now again as new records become available on-line but ultimately I've given up and moved on!

ps. Joonie- everytime my FMP subscription's up I say I can't afford it- but after month I'm back on it again

there is a woman in the Humphries household whose surname before marriage was Britt, of the age of a daughter

Births Jun 1922
Britt Annie I Wilkinson Dudley 6b 1747

so this one seems likely

Marriages Jun 1926
> Britt Mary Humphries Dudley 6b 1945
Bryson Francis H Jeavons Dudley 6b 1945
> Humphries Arthur Britt Dudley 6b 1945
Jeavons Gertrude L Bryson Dudley 6b 1945

Marriages Jun 1911
> Britt George Dudley 6c 150
Drew Thomas Dudley 6c 150
Tibbetts Florence E Dudley 6c 150
> WILKINSON Mary Dudley 6c 150

Births Sep 1888?
WILKINSON Mary Dudley 6c 47

Deaths Sep 1924 ?
Britt George 42 (dob c1882) Solihull 6d 614
Births Mar 1882
Britt George Meriden 6d 471

so it seems she is fully accounted for

Hi Austin, I am being kept busy with your list of Marys. The couple Arthur and Mary Humphries caught my eye in particular as he was a policeman. However I cannot trace a marriage on free BMD. Could this mean they were not married and she could be my missing Mary Ann Bass nee Connor?
Thanks for giving me these leads to follow and I am always hopeful that the mystery can be solved eventually.

kind regards
Jennifer :-)

Hello Austin/Joonie. I have done tree searches on all the husbands on your list and hope something comes from that. I was sorry about upsetting Joonie as she has been such a great help to me with several of my searches. I honestly thought the 1939 census and getting the exact date of birth extracted from the software was a standalone issue. I already knew everything else. I had already contacted the national archives to see how I could get a list of all females with the date of birth 9 Aug 1888 from the 1939 census and so far not had a reply from them. Thanks again for all your help.
kind regards
Jennifer

No, Jennifer, this thread is about the same people as all your other threads, in spite of the several times you have been asked to stick to a thread where so much work has already been done on them ...

AustinQ, you might want to know (and Jennifer, there really have been too many threads about these people with never any warning to helpers that the ground has all been trod before, and now starting it all over in someone else's thread)

at that time (2014) I was unaware of others

and about the exact same thing:

Hello Austin, You sound like a busy man. We know all about the siblings and none of them every found out what became of Mary Ann. They wereThomas P Connor 1886, Margaret 1890, Johanna 1895, Ann 1897, Elizabeth 1901.
I do not have Irene's birth certificate and found out about her from a niece of Lilian M Wass. The address was most probably the Camberwell one.
There is no now connection with Mary Ann Bass nee Connor and Lilian Mabel Wass - apart from both being partners to Henry Frederick Bass. I have his death cert from 1959 and the informant was described as a nephew.
The disappearance of Mary Ann has mystified the family for years. She did not divorce Henry as they had no money to do that. In those days before computers you could just move in with someone and start using their surname. I really thought that giving her exact date of birth would be a way of pinning her down. Please don't waste this nice weather doing this. Thankyou so much. regards
Jennifer
