Yes, it is the same one. She is with her son Percy and if you look at the original, her age is 50 and not 30, so a transcription error.

I would think it is highly likely that George's mother was Irish and as his father was a soldier, he met her whilst being stationed in Ireland.

Maybe you should put Ireland in your heading so that anyone with more access to Irish bmd can help you find a birth certificate.

Catherine Report 24 Nov 2015 19:40

I think this is Alice in 1901:-

Name: Alice Schofield
Age: 61
Estimated birth year: abt 1840
Relation to Head: Servant
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Wadworth, Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish: Hessle

William Cooper 57
Harriet S P Cooper 48

Alice Schofield 61
Alice Constable 16

.........................................................

I'm not sure if Margee's 1911 is correct as 1861 shows that Alice is married to a Walter Schofield and not James?????

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 Nov 2015 20:14

I can see 2 possible marriages for James Schofield in Ireland:-

Name: James Schofield
Date of Registration: 1856
Registration district: Cork, Ireland
Volume: 4
Page Number: 469
FHL Film Number: 101246
Records on Page:
Name
William Peter Young
Sarah Cave
Mary Coleman
Mary Walsh
Mary Lyons
Harriet Whale
James Schofield
Denis Regan
John Morton

and this one:-

Name: James Schofield
Date of Registration: 1858
Registration district: Cork, Ireland
Volume: 4
Page Number: 462
FHL Film Number: 101247
Records on Page:
Name
xxxxxxxx James Schofield
Mary Broderick
xxxxxxxx Alice Wordsworth
Mary Anne Bleakker
Mary Chandler Mcgee
Charles Holliday
Thomas Hall
James Sheehy
Mary McGee Chandler

................as Alice is with her father in 1891 and her father is noted as George Wordsworth, then it is likely Wordsworth is her maiden name.
So, note list of possible spouses on above 1858 marriage and there is an Alice Wordsworth so I think this one is looking to be the correct one.

The family are therefore likely to be in Ireland in 1861.

EDIT:-

This is a transcript of the marriage:-

Name: Alice Wordsworth
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 8 Jul 1858
Marriage Place: St Anne Shandon, Cork, Ireland
Father: George Wordsworth
Spouse: James Schofield
FHL Film Number: 101395
Reference ID: p462 ln108

.........which shows Alice's father as George Wordsworth.

............which also gives James' father as Jonathan:-
Name: James Schofield
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 8 Jul 1858
Marriage Place: St Anne Shandon, Cork, Ireland
Father: Jonathan Schofield
Spouse: Alice Wordsworth
FHL Film Number: 101395
Reference ID: p462 ln108

.......................................

The Preston Strike and Lune Street Riot, which took place in Preston, in Lancashire, England over 12 and 13 August 1842, were part of the 1842 General Strike or ‘Plug Plot Riots’. These strikes and disturbances were prompted by depression in 1841-2 which resulted in wage cuts of over 25%. They were influenced by the Chartist movement and the government’s rejection of the petition for ‘People's Charter of 1838’, signed by over 1 million people who demanded a more democratic political system.

Disputes spread throughout the North West of England from late July 1842. Workers in Manchester and Stockport struck on 10 August, Bolton on 11 August and in Preston a mass meeting was called for Friday 12th. The demands made at most of the strike meetings were for a return to 1840 wages and an acceptance of the Charter. One of the Chartist leaders was Preston handloom weaver Richard Marsden.

I've been googling 28th regiment of foot and their history is fascinating. they served in Waterloo (although long before James' time of service), Australia, India, Crimea in fact lots of the important battles that we have all heard of.
Crimea was 1853-1856 so James would certainly have been involved there, makes you wonder if he ever bumped into Florence Nighingale?

Check this out for a little more info:-
http://web.archive.org/web/20080501211135/http://members.tripod.com/~Glosters/crimean.html

REGIMENTAL POSTINGS
28th Regiment
1835 - New South Wales, Australia
1842 - India
1848 - England
1854 - Malta and Turkey
1854 - Crimea, Russia
1855 - Malta
1858 - India
1865 - England
1866 - Ireland

From what I could see the Regiment did a big recruitment campagne in Ireland after the Crimean War (probably because of all their losses) which is probably why James was in Ireland at that time and also after coming home from India.

I wish I had someone in my tree with such an interesting past.
