Where did you find the St. Michael's College reference? Is there any information about when he went there or when he first entered Kind Edward VI School in Norwich?

Also, this Lincoln House... How did you know it was a school? Can't seem to find any references to this (obviously not a skilled geneologist!!!).

Juliet- not sure if you saw, but Gins asked if you had Nellie's birth certificate? Her exact DOB could help in tracing her.

I now think Lincoln House was the name of the property of 104 Pottergate the home of Mr Helsdon and the (a school in Norwich --probally refers where Howard was previously educated.

Perhpas Mr&Mrs Helsdon were a kind of foster parents,?

Nellie/Irene may have re-invented herself and assumed another full name altogether.?

The King Edward Schools.

The one in Whitley Surrey is where a relative went in 1908 but not a rich boarder but from an orphanage in the Paddington area, pupils were given a good education and well looked after,having spoke to a past house master a few years ago,pupils were taken from aged 8 and as no background is known they mostly all got baptised in the school chapel.they were found employment and given over to a carer,till they (boys) were given over to the navy,other King Edwards were released to the army.
The Surrey school is still going today,with many paid boarders from outside UK.a lovley school which we have visited,but a world away from those times.

Some school grounds have different *houses* for lesser aged pupils so St Michaels may have been just that.a junior part?

oh they also did they same for girls making them -proper-for sewing.laundry.or other...
.

The other children baptised to the same parents as Nellie,

Jessie and Laura,

they married and only Laura that I can see only had a son,so probally no later relatives that could hold or passed on information about Nellie .

The British Libray hold the above. .Edward was a curtain designer with artistic flair. :-)

I feel sure he was related to Nellie father...a nephew or cousin..

I have found out that Harold Royston (Nellie's son, b. 1903) went from the Boys Model School in Norfolk, Norwich, which apparently he left in 1917 to go to work, and ended up entering the Training Farm, Goudhurst, Kent in 1918 and was later appointed Housemaster there in 1926. I'm sending a request to Fegan's for information about him which may take a while, but I wonder if Irene went to an equivilent girls school? Apparently in 1911 both Harold and Irene were with a foster family in Twickenham - possibly a Thomas Walker??? Who would have placed them there? Would it have been a church organisation or government? Nellie's grandfather was a Methodist minister...

I just can't understand why or how a mother could leave her two young children to fend for themselves and come and go to and from Bombay without seeming to catch up with them. Mum does say that my Nana (Irene) visited Norwich and said that she was happy there....

The Hepworths ---Joseph Hepworth died later in 1911 at his home in Leeds,did Nellie move with them if she was his sick nurse as he was in poor health according the write up..he spent summers in Leeds and winter at his home in the south of UK.

Thanks so much. I am trying to trace information about Ernest Ranyell as someone posted that he may have been discharged from the army in 1939 for a nervous condition. He seems to have had a brief spell in the St. Pancras Workhouse in 1918... How do I find out where he was being treated, etc..?

Also, would the 1939 census have any reference to Nellie Ranyell?

If you Google Hanwell ..... it seems that there have been some name changes

The Middlesex County Asylum in Hanwell was the first pauper lunatic asylum built in England following the Madhouse Act of 1828. In 1889 the Asylum was renamed the London County Asylum, Hanwell. In 1918 the Asylum became known as the London County Mental Hospital, and then in 1929 it was renamed Hanwell Mental Hospital.

In 1937 its name changed again, to St Bernard's Hospital, Southall.
