Florence Emma Lee born 17/7/1894, died 7/3/1973 (my grandmother). Have copy of birth certificate - Henry Lee grocers packer, Emma Lee formerly Hinton, address 32 Larcom St Walworth.

Baptised 3/8/1894 St John the Evangelist, Walworht, address 2 Larcom st, Henry was a packer.

married 31/10/15 age 20 to Alfred Coppad, All Saints Church, Batterseas (I have followed this side of the tree OK), Henry Lee - packer.

I have found Jessie Lee sibling born 1897 Lambeth parents Henry and Emma, Apr- Jun Volume 1d page 307. Baptism 157/1898 Upper Tooting, Holy Trinity, Wandsworth. Henry - packer at stores.

Traced Henry in 1911, 1901,1891, 1881 and 1851 Censuses, previously married to Sarah who died in 1988.

It seem Edith E Lee born 1882 was at home in 1901 and 1911 Census so prehaps looked after the young children - florence emma and jessie.

The question remains where to look for Emma Lee formerly Hinton?

That's not a fer sure Paula, but I think Emma Hinton who married James Cutts is a pretty good bet for your Emma. :-)

One thing to do would be to try to find descendants of that couple's children ... a bit of a tall order ... and see whether they know the couple's story

EDIT - I don't think those are right ... the census says they were born in Newington, and the Matilda born in Lambeth seems to belong to an Edward Cutts in the 1891 and 1901 censuses

so I'm deleting the possible marriage info I had originally put here, to await further investigation


it certainly is a little odd for Emma Hinton Cutts Lee to have had two children named Florence

If this information is correct, then it seems a bit harsh for Emma to have children who are paupers and in workhouse and then to go on and have another two. I will research this link further. Thank you for your help.

It does put into double the information I was lead to believe that Emma Hinton my great grandmother was Irish and a opera singer but this is why I was researching this side to corroberate or disprove the information.

Before you condemn it as harsh, do remember that the owrkhouse was the only place where poor people could get free medical care.

Also remember that by this point, the Cutts marriage had apparently broken down, not unusual then and far from unusual these days. The only unusual aspect is that the husband apparently had custody of them.

Thus, if the children were put into care, it was their father who did it.

The children seem to have been in and out of the workhouse from about 1893

This school was apparently originally Clapham Home School for Pauper Girls, Clapham/Brixton, London, which moved in 1900 to Arundel House, 135 Acre Lane, Brixton, where on 23rd December it was certified to receive 22 girls. The matron here was Miss Mary E Burpitt.

The School's intake included girls from unions in the London area such as Richmond, Wandsworth, Clapham, Islington, Hampstead and West Ham, and from others as far afield as Sunderland.

The girls were given basic education and were also trained for domestic service, usually leaving at the age of 14, although delicate or 'backward' ones could remain longer. Girls placed out from the School could be received back or otherwise provided for during intervals of service, holidays, etc.

The girls at Acre Lane went unaccompanied to a local London County Council school. They usually left school at the age of fourteen and spent their final year in the home in training for domestic service. All attended the Church of England and a Sunday school. Each summer, the girls had three weeks holiday at the seaside.

John was at the Central London District Schools, Poor Law School for Pauper Children, Hanwell, Middlesex

There is a note on one of the first pages written firmly by the Superintendent

"It is impossible to give this information {place of birth} as the children have not any clear idea of where they were from."

On the 1911 census the details for my grandmother Florence Emma Lee age 16 shows inmate in an institution, county Suffolk, district Ipswich, no. 213. How do I find more information out about this?

St Matthew's Industrial Home for Girls, Ipswich, Suffolk was founded in 1857 by Mr Samuel Belcher Chapman, a local magistrate and former businessman. The premises, at 8 Black Horse Lane, consisted of "three or four cottages, forming three sides of a small enclosure". On June 18the, 1858, the Home was officially certified as a Reformatory for up 20 girls sentenced by the courts to detention for up to five years. The Home also received voluntary admissions.

The girls were given classroom education and industrial training to equip them for domestic service. This included needlework, knitting and working in the Home's laundry. All the work of the household and cooking was done by the inmates.

The premises underwent a major reconstruction in 1885-6, with improvements to the dormitories and laundry. The Home could now accommodate up to 46 girls, aged 13 to 16 at their date of admission.

By the early 1900s, a large amount of outside washing was being done in the Home's laundry, with many of the older girls taking the clothes right through from the washing to the final ironing of stiff linen. Dressmaking and cookery lessons had been introduced and the Home baked all its own bread. A drill sergeant visited once a week to instruct the girls in marching and exercises with dumb-bells and barbells. Occasional walks were taken, and in the summer, the girls attended swimming baths and had a day's holiday at the seaside.

Sarah Callaghan was appointed Superintendent in 1906. The Home closed in 1920
