	My great grandfather, John Baxter, was born in Greenock l849, the son of John Baxter and Elisabeth nee Miller. We believe Elisabeth died soon after the birth on John (l849). On the l87l census John (l849) and his father are lodging in Greenock. John senior states he was born on Bute, but we have not been able to trace him there. We have found a lot of John Baxters born about l826, but none on Bute. Can anyone help please, Thanks, Liz nee Baxter.

	A possible brother to John- born in Rothesay. Perhaps as they lived there John thought he was born there?? Member Since: July 2004 Posts: 5,047 Send Message	Found this ....(see Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it 2 April 12.27) Mary McEwan, wife of John Baxter, joiner, died at 71 Vennel, Greenock on 2nd July 1872 (Greenock Telegraph 3.7.1872) This wont be Mary wife of John McEwan as it states wife of JOHN Baxter and Death Notice is under BAXTER You would need to check Death Cert. on ScotlandsPeople.
