Good find, Choccy!
So the O in Alfretta's name isn't the initial of a middle name, it's part of O'Handley.

It looks as if Gertrude and Henry Handley are a couple of red herrings.

You were asking about the other person on the 1911 census, Olive Jean.

He's Ambrose Yoemans (as transcribed on Ancestry, and it does look like that on the image), a mineral water carter.
It's a mis-spelling of Yeomans. He's probably not any relation - just a boarder.

He's also boarding with the Dorringtons in 1901:

Ambrose Yeomans
in the 1901 England Census

Here he is in 1881:

Ambrose Yeoman

ArgyllGran Report 5 Apr 2016 11:26

Yes, the parents of Alfretta in England in 1911 are Stephen & Elizabeth.

I don't see their marriage - it may have been in South Africa.
Can't see Stephen travelling to or from SA at any time.

Don't know Elizabeth's maiden name to search for her before marriage.
Can't see her travelling as O'handley.

My guess would be that Alfretta travelled with Sarah Charles, as we know Sarah was in SA in 1906 - but I can't see any travel record for Sarah either.

I can't see Ann Cooper Hill definitively before her marriage to Joseph Dorrington.
(Wondered if she had a sister Elizabeth Ann.)

ArgyllGran Report 5 Apr 2016 11:49

It occurs to me that Sarah Charles had a daughter Elizabeth Ann, born 1881.

I wonder if Sarah was Alfretta's grandmother?

Hi
I hope I have this right
So Elizabeth Charles born 1880 Derbyshire was
John Charles and Sarah Charles nee Cooper daughter

That's why Sarah Charles and Alfretta MO Handley are on the Darringtons 1911 Census
So Ann Cooper (Hill ) Darrington are related

I wonder when Eliabeth went to South Africa
I have tried the Webb Site for the S A National Archives to maybe find the Marriage but no luck
Thankyou so much the jigsaw goes on !!

AustinQ Report 6 Apr 2016 15:32

I don't see the marriage either- perhaps Elizabeth was previously/ already married? She may have taken on Stephen's surname?

I don't understand these South African records from http://www.ancestor.co.za/search_beta.asp but I'm presuming they are death dates?

Perhaps someone else can help?

JOHN MORGAN CHARLES Spouse: SARAH COOPER 1905
SARAH CHARLES maiden name:COOPER spouse JOHN MORGAN 1920
ELIZABETH ANN O'HANDLEY maiden name: CHARLES spouse: STEPHEN 1933
STEPHEN O'HANDLEY spouse:SUBSEQUENTLY ELIZABETH ANN 1931
