If Agnes is 15 in 1927, she is not John's daughter.

John W Stuart in the Canada, Voters Lists, 1935-1980

Name: John W Stuart
Occupation: Sheet Metal Worker
Year: 1945
Location: Montréal, Québec, Canada
Electoral District: Verdun

John and Mrs John, 3846 Wellington St, Verdun

women were listed by their own names starting in the 50s, but unless Mary was with John it could be impossible to identify which Mary Stuart she was ... they were numerous in the Montreal region, and the family could have moved elsewhere

I did wonder if Agnes was a niece rather than daughter, will try and check this out
On Scotland's People. Thanks very much for help meantime. Needle and haystack comes to mind!

Lovell's directory is at:
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/

Pick Montréal et sa banlieue [Montréal & its suburbs]
then a year, e.g., 1945
then a name lookup - Annuaire alphabétique montréalais

Stuart J W sheet metal wrk TCA 3846 Wellgtn (V)
[TCA was his employer - his addy is 3846 Wellington (Verdun)]

Only workers get listed, or, in their absence. the head of h/h.
NB Women can be alphabeticized under M for Miss/Mrs

To check for non-Stuarts in the h/h, we do an address lookup in - Annuaire montréalais des rues. All that shows up is:
Wellington 3846 Stuart J W

I'll leave it to you to work back and forward from 1945.

NB - there's a download button in the image header bar - right-click on this, and save the page - page image comes as a pdf.

and that's the same info as on the 1945 electoral list I posted above ... but Heather didn't seem too interested. ;-)

Thank you for info and link,I will explore this tonight. Unless middle names are included the names seem to be very common combinations. In Scotland John was a
Telephone Wireman but certainly could be a change of occupation.
Middle names John Westland, Mary Armstrong and May Findlay.
Apologies if I did not appear very interested, this is so far from the case.

JC - I know. I deliberately picked your ER year as I knew what I expected to find.
The real point of my post was to illustrate how one could use this free resource to track him whilst he was in Montréal.

true mgnv, since I hadn't had any luck with the voter's list after that year :-)

By doing that address search, Heather, you could hopefully determine when/whether they moved, or John died and Mary remained, for instance.

We do know at least that John consistendly did use his middle initial, so it's one way of distinguishing him.

It wouldn't be unusual to swap an occupation for a better paying one after emigration, for instance.

John appears at that address until 1952. Will try search for death around that time,
also possible marriage for May. Have already searched Ancestry without success.
