Find Ancestors

I have this family in 1911, who are my husband's ancestors. Jane says she has had 5 children, 1 of whom has died.

She has Ronald with her and her 2 daughters are at what seems to be a childrens' home. There is a Foster Mother employed by Poor Law looking after a number of children.



I have found a death for Leslie Shwankey but I can't find his birth.

I would like to find out if he was Jane's son as Shwankey is not a very common name.

Jane also says she's been married 11 years but her marriage to James Shwanky was in 1910. I have their MC which states he was a Ship's steward 32, of Rose Cottage, off Wellington St, Cardiff. His father was Charles (dec) a master mariner.
I can find absolutely nothing on the Shwank(e)ys at all.

EDIT The witnesses were J Russell and Alice Murray who are totally unknown to me.

Their first daughter, Violet Maud, was born in 1902 so that probably explains why she said she was married in 1900.


Jane aka Jennie, was then married to James Rooney in 1914, I think (I have sent for this MC) but she married under her maiden name, Morgan. I hope the certificate will shed some light on this. They had a daughter, Kathleen in 1912 who was my husband's granny so I know Jane in 1911 is the correct person. Kathleen's MC in 1931 says her father, James (dec) had been an electrical engineer.

I hope this is not too confusing. Basically, I'd like to find Leslie Shwankey's birth and if anyone can find anything on James or Charles Shwanky I would be over the moon. I also know nothing about James Rooney but hopefully, the MC will tell me more about him.

Thanks Chris Ho, I hadn't seen those birth notices before. 11 July 1902 was the birth date of Violet Maud.

Det, I will send for the death certificate but would rather the birth one if it could be found.

Ah Malyon, well spotted! I wonder if that is the birth? Yes Jane's name was Morgan and her next marriage to James Rooney was as Morgan.

Looks like that would also be worth buying. Jeez, this hobby is expensive!!

so jane was not married to shwanky when leslie was born so might not have been the father

Jane married Shwanky in 1910 although she says in the 1911 census she has been married 11 years. All her other children are born as Shwankys but you are right, perhaps Leslie had a different father.

Will send for both the birth and the death certificates to try and sort this out.

That does look entirely possible. I think I will get the death certificate for Leslie Shwankey and take it from there.

Malyon, I agree that it is a very strange name that possibly is foreign. Would explain why it doesn't come up again.

Well I have received Leslie's death certificate and he died 9 Nov 1910 in the Cardiff Union Infirmary. He was 13 months old so born Sept/ Oct 1909 and his father was James Shwankey, cook in the merchant service of Barry. He was registered by James R Ingledew, Master of the Union Workhouse, Cardiff.

So the poor little mite is definitely James' son and probably Jane's as well as she mentions one deceased child in 1911. I wonder if she was with him when he died, I do hope so.


I also received the MC for James Rooney and Jennie Morgan. He was 30, a dock labourer of 25 Foster Street, Cadoxton, Barry and his father was John Rooney (dec) General labourer.

Jennie was 33 and a widow of the same address. John Morgan (dec) Coal Trimmer was her father.

Witnesses were R Hyde and J T Lindsley, names unknown to me.


As you can see, Jane/ Jennie has shaved some years off her age but they are the same person. All her Shwankey children changed their names to Rooney after this marriage, I presume.

So I'm not much further forward :-(
