I might make a guess that John and Norah were not actually married, there are a couple of Norah's who might be the daughter born around the right time in Bedwellty?

Nor can I find any death for a Norah Desmond born around 1882,

Me neither Rose.

This is one of the worst military names we have researched.

Absolutely nothing makes any sense if we are to base our research on what is on the record.

The memorial inscription for Dennis and the right birth record with Mother's maiden name Walsh.

I am truly going nuts with this.

Probably won't help at all, but just thinking if family have anything with John Desmond's handwriting on they could compare it to the two 1911 entries, as both signatures are quite distinctive?

Thanks malyon, the Newport births wouldn't fit I'm afraid but I am open to all suggestions.

ATM I am working on the theory that John Desmond b. 08 Feb 1877 was born in Cork. The dates would fit the death in the village 1946.

Bridget Cody born 1888 died 1910 married April 1907 Merthyr Tydfil V11a P1231 to Edward Desmond
Is he the John Desmond widow in 1911 with Anastasia + Jeremiah.Anastasia an unusual name and happens to be the name of Bridget Cody's mum.

John Desmond married Bridget Walsh July 1908 V11a P1341.
Is he the one with wife Norah and could Norah actually be Bridget. No death for a Norah but one for Bridget Desmond in 1934.
Bridget Desmond born @ 1880 died Cardiff 1934 V11a P309.

All guess work but could be possible.

aaaargh!!!!! that's how I still feel this morning.

Facts as I have them:

John Desmond married Bridget Walsh 1908 and had 2 children, Anastasia and Jeremiah. There is a death for Bridget Desmond in 1910 (just a few weeks after Jeremiah was born).

On the 1911 census where John is shown with the young children he states he is a widower and I am happy that line finishes there.

The 1939 register for Long Row seems the most likely for Thomas Desmond (birth dates fit) and there is a John Desmond living there who's DOB fits in with Desmond/Walsh births in the village i.e. Dennis' brother.

Cannot find any enrolment papers for John Desmond which would give more info on his dependants. (still looking). The years whilst he was serving makes sense of the gaps in the childrens' birth years.

If John Desmond is the one born in Cork he was in Cork in 1901 with parents Jeremiah and Norah (Honora) as mary mentioned.

BUT I cannot for the life of me tie in a Bridget Walsh to a John Desmond to prove the commemoration dedication for Dennis.

I really appreciate your help.

Mary Report 24 Apr 2016 11:48

The tree on Ancestry has Bridget Codey/Cody marrying Edward/John Desmond his parents Jeremiah 1831 Cork Ireland and Ellen 1836

No documents to prove either way but they have dates of son Jeremiah born 31/1/1910 he went on to marry Stella Hollingsworth in London 1948

Bridget 1888 died 29/5/1910 in Workhouse
John Desmond died 16/1/1915 workhouse
Anastasia died 21/1/1920 at 44, Thomas street which was the workhouse.

Hi mary,

The family appeared to have stayed in the village and I am happy that Anastasia died in 1920. As I am happy with the death of Bridget Desmond I have closed that particular line.

The thing that is absolutely throwing me is the record of four births Desmond Mother maiden name Walsh and given as Bridget on the dedication.

Of course there IS the possibility that whoever worded the dedication got their facts wrong...not the first time, even found memorials for servicemen that survived and we all know there are many servicemen who have been omitted.

Hi Chris,

I think the 1939 register John Desmond's death is the one in the village:

1946 Bedwellty aged 69. The ages would be perfect.

We have been through the AVL link for John and there are no useful records which give his dependants on signing up which would have clinched it.

The gap in the nee Walsh births would fit perfectly with army service.

I have posted for help on our bigger village site and someone has come back tonight who's brother worked with Tommy Desmond. (Thomas) in the pits.

He is going to try and contact him to see if he can provide any clues.

Thanks for your help, please don't give up...lolol I haven't although I will be sectioned shortly.
