I just added a little more to my post above

Cakeworthy Report 5 May 2016 09:54

Thanks AustinQ, in the departure year of 1909 my Mary Letitia would've been born, she'd of been about 15 months old. Maybe she left Mary behind? Perhaps I do need to look further a field.

AustinQ Report 5 May 2016 09:58

I don't have time to look know- but the shipping record I put up is from FMP, but on Ancestry there are more records- and one where M L Scott is described as a widow.

If no-one has looked into it, I'll check it further when I get back.

After a little more digging on that passenger list, I'm leaning towards that M L Scott being Elizabeth Strettell Evatt's mother- and thinking the age should be 78 (not 28). Elizabeth, her husband Evelyn, and her mother appear together on a later passenger list.

Furthermore I see no other children born to Mary Letitia and her husband Strettell Jackson Scott.

So back to the drawing board!

I have now sent off for Marys death Certificate on the slim chance that if migh reveal her place of birth.

You can search on Ancestry for Fran* Scot with keywords "Coal Miner". There are only 4 of them in 1911 and I don't think any of them are yours.

I'll check the 1881 census and let you know if any of them are possible. The only English census that can be searched by occupation are the 1881 and 1911. All the others you need to look at each image. All the Scottish census transcribed on Ancestry can be searched by occupation.

Anything's worth a try. Can you let us know please if the death certificate reveals anymore detail?

Worth remembering that the year of birth was different on her death certificate to that that she herself had given in 1939.

I still can't help feeling that she wasn't born Scott but that was maybe a stepfather's surname.

That Frank Scott has been married 4 years and has had 2 children and they are with him on the census.

Ok thanks rootgatherer

Cakeworthy Report 7 May 2016 09:46

On the basis that Frank might be her step father I have looked for Mary Letitia's born in 1908 qu2 (Warburton, Harries and Totty) and then looked for a marriage between those Scott and those surnames.

I haven't had any success but will check other the other quarters and 1909 as her DOB was different in 1939.

Although her age is 39 on her marriage cert (3.6.48) she would've been 40 just 2 weeks later. And this is signed and witnessed so I would think this to be correct. Meaning born in 1908.

You'll be able to order her death certificate online from the GRO.

I would count to much on ages being accurate on marriage certificates, people tell porkies for all sorts of reasons. I have an example in my tree where a couple had their marriage re-registered years later because the bride had knocked two years off her age.

There are also deaths listed there- I think it was a general nursing home.

Stirling Observer - Tuesday 06 March 1945

A minor warrant was granted to Moraig Nursing Home, Stirling (Ltd), to make alterations to the coachman's house at 9 Gladstone Place.

Feeling a bit deflated today.
I have received Mary Letitia Scott's deaths and it didn't reveal her place of birth.

I wouldn't pay a genealogist! Have you really exhausted all avenues?

I haven't read through all the thread again (and my memory isn't great), but -

Have you contacted central libraries re addresses on electoral registers. Some libraries will help- when did Mary Letitia first appear at the Sherwood address- were there others listed with her at the same address in different years.

Is the informant who you expected it to be? Is it a family member that can be traced?

Have you made contact with George's descendants to see if they have any information?

I'm hopeful that others will come up with a few suggestions of help- that you can do yourself without paying fees.

When I searched in FMP (dont have full access) under Mary Letitia Scott, electoral roll to 1932, there appears to be some records for Cornwall.

At what age would she start to appear on the electoral roll if she was born in 1908?
