safc - I don't think the Frome connection is my family, but thanks for all the information. I'll look at all the Bridgwater information.

AustinQ - My Mary Hawkes (the grandmother) is born 1774 in Minehead -from 1851 census. This could possibly be my Robert ( wonder why no Hawkes in the surname , if it's him) a few in my family were sailors. Thanks for the information.

Malyon - Thanks for the information. I wonder why the Hawkes name hasn't been used.

wonder if they were born headford and the mother lived with a hawkes so used the name hawkes in earlier census
