Yes, I saw those ArgyllGran but, somewhere on the other thread Detail says he died in 1962.
I don't know where?
The friend who is looking for half siblings in Canada would NOT have known this grandfather if he died in 1962 which contradicts the info that I was given

From Detail 18.04
"Alexander John Cameron and Agnes was in Oban."

What are you referring to?

Re death of Alexander John (jr) -

As his wife Agnes died in Edinburgh, maybe one of these is his death ??

1972 CAMERON ALEXANDER JOHN M 73 HAYMARKET EDINBURGH CITY/LOTHIAN REGION 730/00 0145

1975 CAMERON ALEXANDER JOHN M 77
LEITH EDINBURGH CITY/EDINBURGH 732/00 0361

These are the only deaths for that name, in Edinburgh, 1936 - 99

GlasgowLass Report 18 May 2016 18:07

That's the point Detail.
There is NO birth record for anyone with this name born in Edinburgh 1944

ArgyllGran,
I wondered about Ian because it's his son's name.

I have no doubt that the Cameron family moved from Oban to Edinburgh but, the question is when did they move?

Alexander John was living in Oban when he married his 1st wife in 1924
She died in Oban in 1935 and Alexander John was STILL living there where he remarried in 1936.
If JA had children from his 1st marriage, I expect that they would be born in Oban.
Depending on when JA and Agnes moved to Edinburgh, they too may have had children born in Oban.

I know they were in Edinburgh by 1960's but it doesn't necessarily mean their children were born there.
This needs a GRO visit... LOL

Re: father JA Cameron Snr who died in 1928
I misread his obituary and thought it I saw that he was born in Dingwall.
Having re read it, I see he was born in the county of Ross and left a legacy to the hospital in Dingwall.. DOH!

ArgyllGran Report 18 May 2016 17:18

If GlasgowLass's suggestion that his name was Ian is feasible, there was a birth of an Ian James Cameron in Edinburgh in 1944, and also a John James Cameron.

Ian is Gaelic for John - but these two births are two separate people.

There's also an Alastair Hugh born Edinburgh 1944. Alastair (and other spellings) is Gaelic for Alexander.

And an Ian with no middle name.

Why do you think his name might have been Ian, GL?
Because his grandfather was from Ross-shire and had the middle name of John, perhaps , with possible Gaelic connection?

Incidentally, his grandfather was born in Fodderty, per 1901 census posted on page 1, near but not actually Dingwall.

Detail,
I was going over your previous thread re James Alexander Cameron b Jul 1944 in Edinburgh and died in Poole. Dorset in 2013
He was the son of Alexander John Cameron with 2nd wife Agnes Cunningham.
Agnes Cunningham was already 30yrs old when she married in 1936.

A child born 1944 is 8yrs after her marriage and she would already be in her late 30's at this time
I assume that his father, Alexander John Cameron will also have older children from his 1st marriage with Martha Buchanan and perhaps more with Agnes.

I agree with what was said on your previous thread.
There was no child named James Alexander Cameron born Edinburgh 5yrs either side of 1944.
Is James Alexander Cameron the name on Sue's birth cert?
Who registered his 2013 death? Was it Sue or someone else?
Can I assume that his date of birth actually came from his passport rather than a birth certificate?
Please ask Sue where the DOB came from.

Lots of questions but I dont think his birth name was James Alexander.
I wonder if his name was Ian Cameron

I'm not certain exactly where and when his father died but my guess is that his mother was the woman who died in Edinburgh in 1985 as the death index on SP fits her profile.
Agnes Cameron, other name Cunningham age 78

Am I correct in assuming that this son, known as James Alexander, his Canadian wife and children all travelled from Canada to Scotland for this funeral?

One last question.
What document does Sue hold that states her father was the son of Alexander John Cameron with Agnes Cunningham?

After a few google searches, I discovered that Alexander John Cameron (Snr) is famous for creating John Dewars White Label ( Blended Whiskey) in 1898.

There is also a tree on Ancestry where the tree owner seems to be directly descended from son, William Dawson Cameron from a 2nd marriage.
If this tree is correct, William remarried in Edinburgh 1947 to:
Millicent Doris Erasmusen or Morrison
This tree also states he died in Edinburgh in 1952

( checked SP and this death exists. approx year of birth: 1911)

1 1947 CAMERON WILLIAM DAWSON ERASMUSON MILLICENT D MORNINGSIDE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/07 0222

3 1947 CAMERON WILLIAM DAWSON MORRISON MILLICENT DORIS MORNINGSIDE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/07 0222

Glasgowlass - the link to the folder on Keepsafe doesn't work. Anyone who clicks on it gets taken to their own Keepsafe.

Open each individual image etc, set it to 'shared with everyone' then copy the individual url to the thread.

The Oban Distillery Co bought the existing distillery in 1924, according to this:

http://tinyurl.com/zlro6bo
so that's why AJC bought his shares, I expect. Maybe that's when he became manager.

Although he is stated to be a distillery manager on his marriage cert in 1936, Oban distillery was mothballed 1931-37, also per that page.
