JoonieCloonie Report 21 May 2016 17:47

Good, Paul! Because then we would still have to figure out what became of William and Mary Ann, and why the two girls adopted her surname, even though their births were registered in his and he was apparently their father - and Emily acknowledge him as such when she made 'William Iverson, builder' her father when she married!

... and then why Lydia was using 'Iverson' when she witnessed Emily's marriage (as I think I understood that) ... it never ends :-D

Some of us have long experience with name shifters, and that is a bit of a classic case. An ancestor of mine adopted a surname other the one he was registered in, (possibly because his registered father was not his true father). But on his marriage certificate, he used his registered father's correct first name, along with his own adopted surname - just like 'William Iverson'.

Don't worry Rootgatherer I will let everyone know. This has been my brick wall for some time. Looking forward to knocking it down.

Well done Joonie! That all looks good to me.

Paul as the helpers on here are a nosey lot, can you please let us know when the birth certificate arrives and if the DOB tallies with the 1939 register. Fingers crossed :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 May 2016 17:51

and this could be Mary Ann in 1841 in the Tooting Infant Parochial Establishment

... actually, that Sarah (daughter of Sarah and Edward) could be Mary Ann's mother ...

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 May 2016 02:19

just a weak-ish possibility for Mary Ann Iverson Cousens after 1871

Marriages Mar 1886
xCHILDS Ellen Wandsworth 1d 630
COUSENS Mary Ann Wandsworth 1d 630
Humphreys John Wandsworth 1d 630
xMUHL John George Wandsworth 1d 630

ruled out the other couple, in 1891 census, so this Mary Ann Cousens married John Humphreys

1891 ??

Name: Mary Humphreys
Age: 63
Estimated birth year: abt 1828
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: John Humphreys
Where born: St Luke, London, England
Civil Parish: St George the Martyr
County/Island: London
Country: England
Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
Sub registration district: London Road

John Humphreys 65 clerk of works or >> builder's foreman
Mary Humphreys 63

also in 1881

Name: Mary Ann Humphreys
Age: 53
Estimated birth year: abt 1828
Relationship to Head: Wife
Spouse: John Humphreys
Where born: St Lukes, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Southwark St George Martyr

John Humphreys was born in Billesdon, Leicestershire, and I can't find him in 61 or 71 to see whether this couple was already married

(edit - after Paul replied - I did find John Humphreys in 1871; he was recorded as married but no wife present (possibly his previous marriage prevented a marriage to Mary Ann Iverson 'Cousens' until his first wife had died, was my suspicion; see below now, putting it here to keep info together)

Name: John Humphrey (image says Humphreys)
Age: 46
Estimated birth year: abt 1825
Relation: Lodger
Where born: Billesdon, Leicestershire, England
Civil Parish: St George
County/Island: London
Country: England
Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
Sub-registration district: London Road
occupation: builder's foreman
marital status: married

here he is in 1861 with first wife

Name: John Humphery
Age: 36
Estimated birth year: 1825
Relation: Lodger
Spouse's Name: Mary Humphery - 33, born Bethnal Green
Where born: Leicestershire, Middlesex, England
(it says Billesdon, Leicestershire)
Civil Parish: Lambeth St Mary
County/Island: Surrey
Registration district: Lambeth
occupation: bricklayer

in 1901 he is in Scalby, Yorkshire, builder's foreman, aged 76, again as Humphrey, reporting widowed ... if he and Mary Ann Iverson Cousens (if that was her!) had separated he might have reported widowed from his first marriage ...

-----

Deaths Dec 1916 ?
Humphreys Mary A 87 Wandsworth 1d 700

possibly ...

Deaths Sep 1878
COUSENS William 62 St. Saviour 1d 119

Deaths Jun 1871
Cussans Albert 1 Wandsworth 1d 403

Births Sep 1874 ?
Cussans Charlotte Alice Wandsworth 1d 612
... no, in 1901 she is the daughter of a William and Alice couple, him born c1849 Chatham

1851?

Name: Mary Iverson
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1830
Relation: Niece
Where born: London, England
Civil Parish: Battersea
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England
Registration district: Wandsworth
James Fuller 42
Mary Iverson 21

she is the only Iverson shown at Ancestry in Wandsworth in 1851

fits with birth of Amelia who was stepdaughter of William Cussans in 1861:

Births Dec 1852
Iverson Amelia Wandsworth 1d 365

only other record for the name:

Marriages Dec 1878
IVERSON Amelia Strand 1b 1005

and yes that is her - in 1881:

Name: Amelia Dillon
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1852
Relationship to Head: Wife
Spouse: Henry Dillon
> Where born: Clapham
Civil Parish: Marylebone
County/Island: London
Country: England
Street address: 101 Carlisle St
Marital Status: Married
Registration district: Marylebone
Henry Dillon 28 - painter's labourer
Amelia Dillon 29
Henry Dillon 1

1901 in Clerkenwell:

Henry Dillon 48
Amelia Dillon 49
Henry Joseph Dollon 20
Christopher Dollon 19
Minnie Dollon 18
Alice Maud Dollon 16
Frank Dollon 9
Edith Eliza Dollon 3

so you may have quite a lot of half-rellies now

possibly the death of the first Mary Cousens?

Deaths Mar 1859
Cousins Mary Wandsworth 1d 311

the Mary Cussans in 1861, with daughter Amelia, and in 1871, being Mary Ann Iverson

leaving the question of why the younger children including Emily took her surname ...

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 20 May 2016 00:50

Emily Cousens/Cousans is too good a match ... I think I would get that birth certificate to see whether the DOB matches the 1939 info for Emily Iverson Bonnett ... and whether mother was Iverson ...

1871

William Cousens 70, PLASTERER
Mary A Cousens 50

1851

William Cousens 45
Mary Cousens 40

in 20 years, he aged 25 years and she aged 10 ...

might she be not the same Mary? and the younger children were hers as the single Mary Ann Iverson?

but even still she is a little old in 1871 for the children to be hers ... unless her age was rounded well up too.

where are these people in 1861??

aha

Name: Amelia Iverson
Age: 8
Estimated birth year: 1853
Relation: Daughter
> user has added:
'Source says Daughter in law but think this is wrong too'
>> 'daughter-in-law' means *stepdaughter*
Where born: Wandsworth, Surrey, England
Civil Parish: Clapham
Registration district: Wandsworth
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

William Cussans 46 >> plasterer
Mary D Cussans 30 >> born St Clement Danes
Amelia Iverson 8

Births Dec 1852
Iverson Amelia Wandsworth 1d 365

>>>> so that is the missing link --- Mary Ann Cousens in 1861/1871 was in fact Mary Ann Iverson

The 1871 Mary Cousens was born in St Clement Danes but was '50' in 1871 ... which is not likely

I think this is not the 1851 Mary Cousens ... children of that marriage grown and gone, William now partnered with the new Mary Ann -- Iverson

Ancestry is refusing to allow me to view any images so I can't verify names, occupations, etc.
edit - Ancestry let me in, so to confirm: William Cussans in 1861 was a plasterer
and - the address in both years was Bramwell(s) (Rd)

the note was added in March 2016 so you could contact that person through Ancestry

Paul, you have the census info but nobody else had ... the census details are essential for use in searching and that is why they have been posted here.

This could be a complete red herring but I think these children are actually grandchildren and I wonder if they have been listed with the wrong surname or perhaps the mother remarried an Iverson?
