Many thanks for the O'Brien /Slattery Marriage. The Waterford Registers are a nightmare to read in places but that is my g. grandparents Marriage.

The reason I was looking for the Fitzgerald/Regan marriage following James' birth was the PP would have plenty to say about having children without being married !!

AustinQ Report 1 Jul 2016 16:00

I don't see a marriage for William Fitzgerald and Mary Regan- I don't think they were married. Both sons, William and James have an abbreviated "illegitimate" before their names in the parish register (both born in the workhouse).

Thank You AustinQ....

The above is what I have identified plus a Thomas Baptised 12th June 1867 mother "Betty" Shanahan in some entries Peter's surname is Manning !!

Could you check for the Wm Fitzgerald Marriage to Mary Regan ?
In the Church Reg.for James Baptism 29th (not 9th) May 1867 the PP has made a notation ILLegit.....I cannot locate a marriage for the couple after this as the Registers are missing.

They're on http://www.rootsireland.ie/ I bought a month's sub that's about to run out so thought I'd take a look. It's also where I got Ellen's parents marriage from:

Karen.
Does it say on the Wedding Certificate if Ellen's father was deceased ?
The C Fitzgerald may well have been Christina you should be able to confirm this or not by checking the Church Register normally it is signed in the full name of witnesses.

Does the Baptismal Cert. give any indication of Godparents.

Karen Report 30 Jun 2016 21:53

Hello yes I have a photo copy of my Grand mothers wedding certificate to my Grand dad the witnesses were : C Fitzgerald and J.J. Taylor .
My mums late brother got photo copies of the Baptisms from someone he knew.

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 30 Jun 2016 18:05

Karen...Have you a copy of your grandmothers Marriage Cert.and if so who were the witness' ? also where did you get the details relating to the Baptism's (20.June 09.44)?

The further back I go the more complicated this is getting.....although I believe its possibly the fault of the PP at the time .

I located Thomas' Baptism and went looking for the marriage of Peter Mangan and Eliza.Shanahan....this is what I found..

Feb 26 1866
Peter Mangan son of Peter Mangan and Ellen Curtin married BRIDGET Shanahan daughter of Patrick Shanahan and Mary (Looks like) Broderick
Witness' Michael and James/Jane Slack

Peter was listed as living Clonard (doesn't state East or West) Brid.Redbarn the Slack's also lived Redbarn.
Peter's parents lived Ballycotton and Brids. Cork Lane.

How Bridget became Eliza . I have no idea but following through and cross ref. I can find no children born to a Peter Mangan and Brid .Shanahan.
Why I think its possible the PP may have made an error is because it was often common practice for them to fill in the Registers after the event and he may simply have forgotten or mixed up the mothers Christian name with someone else...Peters surname is also written on some of the entries..as Manning...

I mean any information I get from yourself or others it is very much appreciated on my Grand mothers family in Ireland.

Eringobragh1916 Report 29 Jun 2016 20:38

Karen..Do you mean from members on here...??

I have no idea why Elizabeth Shanahan's Christian name became "Betty" on Family Search as it is transcribed in the Baptismal Reg. for all children as Eliza. Thomas' Godmother was Elena Barry.
