Not unusual for an illegitimate person to name a father on a marriage certificate. Often in the case of males, the father has the same Christian name as their own. Sometime they choose the name of another family member.

Have you looked at the census for the area to see if there is a Thomas Gibson who may have been his father please?

Sheila

Sheila Report 11 Aug 2016 08:51

I did wonder if the Gibson from his forename related to his father but as he was down on the census as Roberts son not step-son I never checked it out I was also trying to find out were the name Tom Elliott as his father came from on his marriage certificate.

So evidently Thomas Gibson Elliott was the illegirimate son of Esther born 1864 but not baptised until 1868 after she was married to Robert Wisker. One would assume that if Robert was the father he would be named on the baptism record and the child would have been given the Wisker surname. I think that it's possible that the child's father was a Gibson, hence his middle name. Just conjecture, of course.
