Ellen did not leave a will. Six years after her death someone has applied for permission( letters of Administration) so that whatever she has left can be dealt with.

Thanks - the will thing is interesting in terms of DoD and probate - or is that usual

If this is Jackie's death, then he can't have been Ellen's son. He must have been the son of an unmarried female Gregg who was using her partner's surname McLeish - or whose partner was willing to be named as the father.

You need the birth cert to check parents' names before spending any more time chasing this possible red herring.

Then, if the birth cert proves he's Ellen's son, which I doubt, you may also want the death cert to check that this is the same person - which seems almost certain.

A copy of Ellen's Will might help:

GREGG ELLEN
Date of death: 8 August 1992
Date of Probate: 16 August 2004
Probate No: 1598427
Type of document: ADMINISTRATION
Registry Office: Leeds

James doesn't seem to have left a Will.

ArgyllGran Report 21 Nov 2022 00:18

Did you ever get either of the birth certs to make sure these were indeed Ellen's children?
Their births were registered as McLeish as well as Gregg - why?

Or James's death cert to see who the informant was?

EDIT:
On second thoughts, the informant was probably his second wife Annie.

I have stupidly returned to

"Hi - I've found two births 1967 Rhoda Watson Gregg and 1969 Jackie Watson Gregg (Male) - can't find any trace of death or marriage - could try kids but that may consume a lot of SP credits - any thoughts"

Cannot find any trace other a FB dormant page for Jackie Gregg

Any thoughts?

So - Ellen was a son of Samuel Motherwell - who in turn was a son of Susan Motherwell (which was my target - and the subject of the article - and many posts), I never really bottomed Samuel Watson and Ellen as we solved the mystery/family myth. That said there is unfinished business as my mother remembers Ellen (when she was a child and Ellen was a glamorous teenager). They drifted from the family - once the search for Ellen's children.

The drain roads were for the oldest daughter who lives in manchester - who rang me about her blocked drain -

This is the Motherwell story https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/history/11459773.time-relative/

I tend to have a habit of frustrating GR experts

Are you sure that's the right link??

Nothing there but heavy duty drain rod set.

EDIT:
Actually, I don't think you intended to insert any link at all - some sort of slip of the mouse.

But having now looked at your several very confusing and convoluted Motherwell/Watson threads, I'm not going to start looking at that branch of your tree - my brain's fried just reading the threads.

If anyone's interested, here's just one of them, with links to others:

Ok - I see what you mean about the marriage - need to think the children issue through. the reason for the search is that it links to a bigger search which in the main concluded but Ellen's Father was a missing link - he basically went to Glasgow and drifted from family links. This is the main storyhttps://www.toolstation.com/heavy-duty-drain-rod-set/p83318 - he was one of Susan Motherwells sons an Ellen as I pointed out was the gamaorus woman that my mother met

ArgyllGran Report 16 Apr 2020 14:22

Re possible divorce -

I see that Ellen died in the same year that James remarried.

So perhaps they didn't divorce. If they had separated, maybe he waited until she had died before remarrying - or else they remained happily together.

ADDED:

In fact, Ellen's death is registered under Gregg as well as Watson . (As already mentioned by Rootgatherer in 2016 )
Scottish deaths of married women are always registered under both maiden and married surnames where known.

So there's no suggestion that they were not together right up to her death.

Rhoda's birth was also registered under the name McLeish.

Have you actually seen a copy of the birth cert? She may not be Ellen and James's child.

Of course you can't get a copy until the present emergency is over.

EDIT:
Jackie's birth was also registered as McLeish

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Apr 2020 14:07

Scotlands People only has records of divorces from 1st May 1984 onwards.

So if they divorced before that (and if it was in Scotland), it's unlikely you'll find any record of it, unless anyone can find a local newspaper report, perhaps.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Apr 2020 14:01

Yes, probably!

Keep everything about Ellen on this thread, to save helpers repeating research already done, and also to make it easier to see what's already known about her.
Nothing annoys helpers more than having to keep referring back to some other thread - we tend to give up and stop looking!

You can, however, edit the title of your thread.
Omit "Help/lookup wanted" - we take that for granted.
Make the title something like " Gone abroad? See post 16/4/20 - Ellen Watson 1930 Glasgow."

Or words to that effect.

On the other hand, now that this thread has returned to the top of the "Find Ancestors" board list, because you've added to it, all the helpers will be looking at it now in any case.

Argyll Gran - I am thinking of posting this as a new search
LOOK UP - POSSIBLY INTERNATIONAL

I am looking into Ellen Miller Watson (1930-1992 GLASGOW) in support of a long standing search into the Watsons of Greenock and Motherwells of Donegal). I am searching for two things, both potentially international:

1. Divorce

Ellen Married: 1955 GREGG JAMES SHEDDEN
WATSON ELLEN MILLER GORBALS GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/15 0627

I know James married again but i can find no record of divorce and indeed on Ellen’s DC in 1992 had reverted to the name Watson (1992 WATSON ELLEN MILLER Not Permissible GREGG F 61 GLASGOW, MARTHA ST GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 615/00 0222

She and probably him, had two Children -1967 Rhoda Watson Gregg and 1969 Jackie Watson Gregg (Male).

There is no UK footprint for them.

There is one reference to Jackie Gregg on Facebook (a shell account with nothing meaningful on) but that links to Phenix in Tennessee but says living in Glasgow

My working theory i that the family went to USA and parents may have come back.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 20 Aug 2016 11:59

I suspect Rhoda (and possibly Jackie too) went abroad. There's no sign of a marriage for either of them, nor a death.

No sign of Rhoda (if unmarried) on searchelectoralroll or 192.com.
There are a few Jackie Greggs, but can't say if they're male or female.
Also one or two Jack Greggs - but no way of knowing if they're him or not.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 20 Aug 2016 08:54

If you buy a copy of Ellen's death certificate, the informant's name and address may prove useful. You never know they may still be living at that address. Have you looked for a death for Ellen's husband please? Again the informant's details could be useful if he died after Ellen.

Thanks all - any ideas on how I might find Rhoda Watson Gregg - I've done all the usual DC MC BC checks but no joy - could have gone abroad early
