Can anyone help - I know that George H .Bidder b.1839 married Sarah A. Freeman in 1866 and spent a short time in U.S.A. as his eldest son Alfred G was born there in 1867. In 1870 George H. was a patient at the Devon and Exeter Hospital and he died in September 1870 aged 31.
I can find no record of their sailing and no immigration records. Ellis Island was not in existence in 1867 so my guess is that they probably arrived through Castle Garden/Clinton!
I cannot find the cause of George's death at such an early age but wonder if he contracted typhus or cholera during the passage as condition for passenger were extremely unsanitary.
Regards Patricia.

Ancestry has this:

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957?

Passenger Lists

I don't have the right membership to view it; maybe someone who has could.

Edit: there is also a record for a Sarah Ann Bidder in the above Lists.

Thank you all so much for your prompt replies.
I have traced my husband's family tree back to 1792.
He has a big birthday coming up and I would like to present him with a complete family history and this has helped me so much.
If anyone can help further, I would be most grateful.
Regards Patricia. :-)

Hi Malyon,
Thank you so much for your previous help.
You asked what more i needed to know - I now know that when George and Sarah sailed to the U.S. they took their year old daughter Eleanora with them!
In the census of 1871 which took place 6 months after George died, their son Alfred G b.1867 in U.S.A and William A. born in Shaugh Prior after their return to U.K. were living with their grandmother. Sarah was living alone. I can find no record of Eleanora.
Did she return to the U.K with them? I can find no record of her marriage or death.
Regards Patricia.

Hi Safc,
Thank you for your previous help,
I wonder if you could help further? I can't find any record of Eleanora Bidder b.1865.( in fact I had no idea of her existence until you found her name on the passenger list of the City of London!)
I can find no record of her birth, marriage or death. Did she travel back to the U.K. with George and Sarah?
I would be most grateful for any further assistance you can give.
Regards Patricia.
