I'm trying to tie some names together...
Charles Edward Smith 1800 - 1879 - Surgeon on a whaler m. 23 April 1829
Wife- Louisa Bowman
Son - Frederick (Bowman) Smith Possibly born 1830 Essex m. Anne Camm
Grandson Henry (Bowman) Smith 1872 - 1921 m. Mildred Lockhart 1882-1974

I just need to prove that Frederick is A) the son of Charles and B) the father of Henry. My eyes are bloodshot from looking and I'm glad my name isn't Smith !
I'll check back tomorrow, many thanks !

Yes, I think I've pinned Charles down to 1887, he appeared in the 1881 census aged 80. Something in the back of my mind tells me Essex records can be seen online via their own website, I'll check tomorrow, ta !
My O.P is now translated as the birth of one Charles 1801 (not 1800) and the death of his son Charles in 1879.

WhiffingSiggs

WhiffingSiggs Report 10 Jan 2017 22:58

On a final note, there was a grandson, Charles Edward Smith, he was born in NZ in 1877 (thank you Chris Ho !) and ended up in England where his father died in 1879. His mother remarried to one Alfred Harris and CES later added Harris to his name. As Charles Edward Smith Harris he became a doctor, was decorated during WW1 and later turned up as a surgeon on Mauretania. (newspaper article 1930) I can find no record of a marriage or children and one possible record of death (Lancing, Sussex, 1950) Can anyone confirm that is his death and there was no wife or children ? Thank you, Kevin.
