Thanks for sending the marriage cert, Nicola.

Harry's occupation is Clerk, Order Department, National Health Insurance (retired).
Richard's details are as you have said:
No 295205, Trooper, Life Guards, Knightsbridge Barracks, Westminster

Edith's father Edward was a Chimney sweep (retired).

Witnesses were J W Sinclair and E J Perry.

Edith signs as J Miles, and Richard as R Sinclair.

Hope that helps!

ArgyllGran Report 11 Mar 2017 23:23

If you like to PM me, Nicola, and attach the cert, I'd be happy to take a look.

Nicola Report 11 Mar 2017 18:56

I have marriage cert for my Richard Francis Sinclair from 1939 to Edith Joan Miles, this is 100% my RFS born 27th Aug 1919 in Lambeth, parents Harry Sinclair and Jessica Hope.
He was not in RAF, thats the Essex RFS born Jan 1920. My RFS died in 1978, I have the death cert.
The marriage cert of my RFS says he was a trooper in Life Guards and living at Knightsbridge barracks at time of his marriage in sept 1939 and his service number was 295205.
So please forget all the others, I thought was him.
The above is my one but can't find this service number anywhere even on FWR.
If anyone would like to take a look at the marriage cert, I would really like a 2nd opinion on the details, especially of RFS father Harry Sinclair, I can't make it out .

Signed up to FWR yesterday for info on a WW2 service record.
I had the name and service number already and was hoping for more info, no DOB, enlistment date or location. No way of knowing I have the right person, maybe I am not using it correctly??

PatinCyprus Report 6 Mar 2017 08:58

All forces records from 1920s onwards are not online and are still with MOD. Here's the link to help you obtain them.

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

It costs £30 and there is a wait of several months

Nicola -

are you still sure that the RFS who died in 1978 is your man? Or was that the other RFS?

You said you had a service record for the wrong one. Have you sent for the record of the right one yet?
It will take several weeks to arrive.

I am ex WRAF and have just looked through this thread.

Alarm bells have just gone off. A rank of trooper in 1939 - this is the lowest rank in the Life Guards.

Flt Lt is the 3rd rank of an officer in the RAF, Pilot Officer at first then Flying officer before Flight Lieutenant by 1942.

You may be following 2 people here, it's not impossible but unlikely that someone in the lowest rank of the army so rapidly becomes quite a senior ranked officer in the RAF.

I am not saying you are wrong just be aware that these could be 2 different men.

War however does make things happen that wouldn't normally happen. The RAF did have SNCOs (senior non commissioned officers) e.g. sergeants as aircrew. I would expect this a more likely route for someone of the rank of trooper if he transferred to the RAF.

:-)

Got marriage cert for Richard Francis Sinclair and Edith Joan Miles.
Confirmed it is my RFS but once again the copy is so bad.
What I can make out is RFS aged 20, Trooper, Life Guards,No 295205, residence: Knightsbridge Barracks, Westminster.
RFS father is Harry Sinclair, but can make out his Occ?
Would like a second opinion if anyone would like to see it and maybe make more sense of it, I would be most grateful.
Any help with service no,Trooper, Life Guards or barracks in 1939 would be great too.

Nicola

Nicola Report 4 Mar 2017 20:22

Thanks all
Now I know who Joan was.
I will have to get a copy of the Marriage cert of RFS to Edith J Miles in Sept 1939, I still haven't found her or RFS on 1939 register.
