Eringobragh1916 Report 14 Mar 2017 18:09

Lynn...It usually meant that the Husband had died.... but....sometimes if the person was not sure eg. when the husband was working away then they put HOF..
.Divorced didn't figure in those days..!!

If you are looking at the 1901 and it has HOF you can always cross check with 1911
see if husband is on that or were any more children added to the family between 1901 and 1911 as he could still be away from home.
We all get mixed up along the way...you go back to the drawing board and start again....
Plenty of help on the Board just takes time and patience to sort out...!!

not sure I think I am getting a bit mixed up with it all.
thank you very much for your help.
all seem like there have the same names which is not uncommon.
when there say female head of the head does that mean that there partner has died/divorced ?

It might be easier if you order the marriage certificate. You can order it here (certificates cost £9.25 using the volume and page number):

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Marriages Dec 1926
Duffy Margaret Melia S. Shields Volume: 10a Page:1150
Melia Martin Duffy S. Shields Volume: 10a Page: 1150

Ordering the marriage certificate should confirm who Martin's father was.

Hello Lynn- in your original post you have that Martin's father (your great grandfather) was Thomas, yet you replied that your Great Grandad, Martin had brother's Andrew and Peter.

Do you have Martin and Margaret's (Duffy) marriage certificate? Who does he list as his father?

I am not sure who great granddad married after Bridget .
just been informed that my granddad, father and step mother went on to have 2 daughters and a son because granddad had a photo in his wallet which he treasured . :-)

Lynn...I cannot find a Martin Melia born to a Thomas and Bridget in the Co Galway around your time frame.. I cant find a Martin Melia of roughly same birth year on 1911 Census...
The only Bridget Malley Melia (22yrs) Death in Galway I can find is 1905 and that was with Typhoid Fever.

Any other clues would be helpful.....
