Birmingham Daily Gazette - Wednesday 26 November 1862

Suicide of a Publican.—
An inquest was held the Stone Cross, End, yesterday afternoon, Dr. Birl Davies, coroner, touching the death oi John Fell Jones, 46, engine fitter, who resided at 14, Chapel Street, where kept a public house.

It appeared from the evidence that on Friday, the21st inst, deceased and his wife retired to rest about twelve o'clock night. On awaking, about four o'clock on Saturday morning, Mrs. Jones found husband was gone. She immediately got up and went downstairs where she saw deceased hanging by his neckerchief in the tap room. She gave alarm; upon hearing which her three sons came down stairs, and one of them cut deceased down, when he was found to be quite dead. Deceased had exhibited signs of insanity for several weeks previous to his death, and scarcely ate any food, saying that his stomach was out of order, but he drank hard at times. He was usually very restless at night, and would get up two and three o'clock of a morning, and 'study'. Before he hung himself he lit the gas and unlocked all the inside doors the house. The wife told deceased, on Friday, that she would send for Dr Macpherson, as she thought he was not right in his head, when replied, 'Please do not.' These bring the facts of the case, the Coroner summed up and the jury returned a verdict of Suicide whilst in an unsound state of mind.”
---------------------------------------

The public house he kept was called the 'Engineer's Arms' in Chapel Street

FHL Film Number: 0560890 (RG4 2558)

...........mother is also Margaret but this time it's Evans.

This could of course be another family, or, John could have been married twice, to two different Margarets
........

..........just a personal hello to AustinQ :-)

Thanks Tiggit. so I think that rules out Margart Gill. Now All I need to find is a marriage between John Jones and Margaret Noble.

The first two children were born in Lancashire so are they from a previous marriage?? John Jones was born in Birmingham, I believe.

I will have to keep on investigating this.

Thanks again

Hi Jane,

There is this marriage in 1838 for a Margaret Gill and John Jones:

Marriage: 16 Apr 1838 St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England
John Jones - (X), of full age, Throwster, Bachelor, Mumps Oldham
Margaret Gill - (X), a minor, Spinster, Mumps Oldham
Groom's Father: Thomas Jones, Well Sinker
Bride's Father: John Gill, Farmer
Witness: James Richardson, (X); Mary Gill, (X)
Married by Banns by: G B Sandford Curate
Register: Marriages 1837 - 1838, Page 181, Entry 362
Source: LDS Film 2356186

But Margaret is recorded as a minor so presumeably would have been under 21 years old which would make her birth year sometime after 1817 and the Margaret Jones in the census records above give her birth as c1811 so your Margaret ? and John Jones could have married earlier

Thank you AustinQ

I can now update my records with that information. All the best

Oh. That causes a problem. I thought Edwards parents were John Jones and Margaret Gill. (I have no proof of this) So you could well be right. I will have to look into this further. Thank you so much
