If Annie was still alive and in the Uk during the war and without any family responsibilities she would have been called up for war work. Which means she could have ended up anywhere on the country. All adding to the difficulties of tracking her down.

women were not conscripted until 1941 and even then not those in Annie's age group. The 1939 register was done on 29 September 1939 only a few weeks after war broke out so she would have been unlikely to have been in the services at that point

Women did volunteer before the 1939 register was done. My Mum did and was in barracks. Yes Annie was older,but they would have needed cooks and cleaners. So don’t discount the idea completely.
