Hi Jo Carole here. Came back to this after a day or two away. I see that Lulabelle found the Laws connection too. I note that you refer to your grandmother being darkish. In fact most Gibraltarians are not. They are a real mixture. I also see that somewhere along the line George ended in Tudhoe. Oddly enough I was researching Blackburn (my mother's maiden name) and I found that a number of ex Royal Artillary men ended up in Tudhoe!
I see that Florence is your grandmother is she the Womack wife that you mentioned before and did I find the correct marriage?

hi carole,do you mean sarah and george in durham if so ,yes it was the right one.i was lucky enough to find a relative that had been doing the womack side[of florences husband, robert] for 25yrs and he gave me a detailed written account dateing back to the 1455,unbelievable.
but my mum seems fixated with wanting info on any gibraltar stuff.

Hi.
Ellen´s name could have been anglicised from the Spanish Elena. If so it´s a possibility that she was actually born in La Linea, the border town which is Spanish. They probably married in Gibralter under his regimental rules & may have been married by the Army chaplain, who probably baptised all the children too. Sorry I don´t have access to these records, but someone else on here will probably be able to help.

Hi Joanne
I have arranged to look at the registers at the Kings Chapel on Wednesday morning. Maybe I will be able to find James and ellen's marriage in there.

Hi Joanne
I went this morning but couldn't find the marriage in the registers at Kings Chapel. That is the Anglican Chruch. Do you know if either James or Ellen were Catholic or Methodist? If so I might be able to try them but that won't be for a few weeks as I am away on holiday from Friday till the end of the month.

hi all ive just been going over my threads to see if ive missed anything as i dont seem to be getting anywhere, and im a bit confused a bout this bit,its proberly obvious, but: i cant see the woods for the trees,!

page 2 of threads, marrige dec 1890 thomas laws an ellen wright, walsingham 4b 818.

was this the daughter ellen[1864]?
or ellen[1843] re-marrying??

i thought laws was ellens [1843] maiden nam

can anyone see any sence in it?

Joanne

Joanne Report 24 Jul 2010 22:11

to add to the confusion.looking at some cencus records.1901cencus
william wright age 61 born ireland,in the army
ellen wright 59 gibraltar
james wright 22 hounslow
rose wright 19
mary 16
353 east india rd borough of bromley
does anyone think she would of married again and continued to have kids.or maybe william and james[1833] are brothers.
or not even the same ellen, what do you think??????????

lulabelle Report 25 Jul 2010 00:20

Hi Joanne,

The marriage I found would be Ellen senior re-marrying to a Thomas Laws.
If I was you I would send off for the birth certificate for one of the children born in England to get Ellens maiden name.

That William and Ellen you found on the 1901 census are also on the 1881 census, so that would not be the same Ellen as yours.

Joanne Report 25 Jul 2010 11:33

well, ive looked through the births for ellen1874 and there are so many ,im not sure where she was born ,the only district that rang a bell was w.derby8b 486 .whats the best way to be sure .ill try to find out where ellen1843 was in 1874.actually i have a note of ellen 1874 being born in sheffield, but on that same cencus some of the older ones had uk births as well, so theres a mistake[maybe deliberate]. somewhere.
