Yes Austin. You have the right people. It was a strange coincidence that my uncle's new partner was called Wass (and he was Bass) I have been in contact with relatives of Lilian Mabel Wass who assured me that the only child they had died at the age of two years. Yes - I searched the electoral registers when I had membership but not knowing what surname Mary Ann was using I could not find her of course. There was a couple of years in the 1930's where a Mary ANn Bass was listed at Philip ROad Camberwell but she had gone gain by 1936.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks and regards

Yes - you are in the right place. For the couple of years Mary Ann or Ann Mary Bass was back with Henry Frederick Bass the LIlian M Wass (or Bass as she called herself) was not there. She definitely would have registered for a ration book in 1939 but using what surname??? Definite date of birth 9 August 1888. Are you able to pull out the female babies with that birthdate please?
thanks and regards

Could you look at the Mary Lewis entry for me as Lewis was a name in that family in those days. It may just be a co-incidence of course. Thanks again.

Thanks Austin. The closed record is most probably their child and the Thomas is most likely a child of voting age? I will get in touch with Mary Ann's niece asap and report back. :-D

jenVG Report 15 Aug 2016 15:26

Hello Alan, Thanks for that. So could it be that Mary A Hammond shared the exact same date of birth as our Mary Ann Connor? Are you able to look at Marriages & Banns on Ancestry and look at the certificate to see the name of the bride's father please? Thanks for your interest in this age old problem.

The London marriages only got up to 1920 on Ancestry

AustinQ Report 15 Aug 2016 18:57

I'm pretty sure this is coincidence (and I know dates are wrong for marriage, but I don't see the marriage it refers to),- I got all excited until I saw dates for marriage!

Coventry Evening Telegraph - Monday 10 December 1917

SEPARATION ORDEtR GRANTED
Henry Bass, Hendon, Middlesex was summoned by his wife Mary Ann Bass, 20 David Road, Coventry, under The Married Women's Act, desertion being alleged. Mr S R Masser, appeared for the complainant who stated that she and her husband were married in March 1891 at Chlemsford and that there were 3 children of the marriage. Up to the 15th April 1917 she was living with her husband at 20 David Road, Coventry. On several occasions previously her husband had ill- treated her and had turned her and the children out at 11 or 12 o'clock at night. She had had to go to the police station and had threatened to take out proceedings for a separation order against him. Eventually on the 15th April last he left her and then made an offer of payment towards the support of herself and the children...

jenVG Report 15 Aug 2016 20:23

Oh - what a coincidence! But the marriage date would have meant Mary Ann being only 3 years old. Mary Ann & Henry Frederick married in December 1907 & we have their marriage certificate. Up until the 1911 census they were childless. He turned up in Camberwell in the early 1920's so I suppose there would have been time to produce a couple of kids! However, WW1 was in those intervening years.
Family gossip passed down says that she ran off with a policeman. Their address in Arbour Square Stepney had a police station there. so maybe a neighbour? The things they got up to with no telly to watch eh?
I still can't contact her niece so maybe she is away on holiday.
What do you think about that Mary Hammond marriage to Albert Lewis? I think it is not our couple as their son was already of voting age in 1939. I suppose he could have been a 7 yr old child from Albert's previous marriage? I really am rambling on now am I not? Thanks for your continuing interest in all this.
regards
Jennifer

Jennifer, I'm short on time tonight, but will have another look over the next few days, but just something that's niggling me. The only Bass mmn Wass birth I see is this- do you have the birth or death cetificate?:

First name(s) IRENE
Last name BASS
Birth year 1914
Birth quarter 4
Mother's last name WASS
District CAMBERWELL
County London
Volume 1D Page 1678

And presumably this is her death?

First name(s) IRENE
Last name BASS
Gender Female
Birth year 1915

Yes - That was the child of my uncle and his new partner Lilian M Wass who called herself Lilian M Bass on all the electoral registers and the 1939 census shows both names. It still does not help with his proper wife's whereabouts and her new adopted name.
Goodnight. Sleep tight.

jenVG Report 16 Aug 2016 17:54

Hello again. I have spoken to the niece of Mary Ann Bass nee Connor and she says it must be a coincidence that the Mary Lewis married to Albert Lewis is not her Mary as the address is not in the area of her Lewis tribe. Strange about sharing the same birth date though. Maybe we are missing something?
Therefore we would be looking at all the others on the list you sent me - leaving out the "single" ones. Would it be possible for you to look up as many as you can bear to do of the married Marys and Joan and I can take it from there. Needless to say we would both be very grateful for any further information we get and understand if the weather is too good at the moment for you to be indoors searching. Thanks again for you help so far and we understand if you feel you have given enough time to this already. Kind regards

Jennifer :-)

Evening Jennifer,

I've been working today and out this evening. I should have time to look at this tomorrow and send you the relevant records.

I just wondered what the address was on little Irene's birth certificate?

Also, did you trace the siblings of Mary Ann Connor- I wondered if their whereabouts might provide some clues?

jenVG

jenVG Report 16 Aug 2016 23:11

Hello Austin, You sound like a busy man. We know all about the siblings and none of them every found out what became of Mary Ann. They wereThomas P Connor 1886, Margaret 1890, Johanna 1895, Ann 1897, Elizabeth 1901.
I do not have Irene's birth certificate and found out about her from a niece of Lilian M Wass. The address was most probably the Camberwell one.
There is no now connection with Mary Ann Bass nee Connor and Lilian Mabel Wass - apart from both being partners to Henry Frederick Bass. I have his death cert from 1959 and the informant was described as a nephew.
The disappearance of Mary Ann has mystified the family for years. She did not divorce Henry as they had no money to do that. In those days before computers you could just move in with someone and start using their surname. I really thought that giving her exact date of birth would be a way of pinning her down. Please don't waste this nice weather doing this. Thankyou so much. regards
Jennifer

AustinQ, you might want to know (and Jennifer, there really have been too many threads about these people with never any warning to helpers that the ground has all been trod before, and now starting it all over in someone else's thread)

at that time (2014) I was unaware of others

and about the exact same thing:

Hi Joonie. This thread is purely about the contents of the 1939 census. Everything else has been covered by the previous threads and thanks again for your part in those.
