Can I access police records of the time? (1860-1861)

Thank you.

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2016 22:25

The record doesn't give his age at date of sentence.

Robert

Robert Report 4 Apr 2016 20:40

According to England & Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892
John Lucas and Joseph Garnett sentenced to 4 years penal servitude.
At the time sentences less than 12 months, imprisonment, over 12 months, penal servitude. Can I get an age of John Lucas at the date of the sentence?

lancashireAnn Report 4 Apr 2016 14:09

There is a John Lucas sentenced in October 1861 in Manchester to 4 years imprisonment (not penal servitude) for stealing bales of cotton

PM from Robert today:

Your John William Lucas arrived Slains Castle died Moonta SA 1905
My John William Lucas arrived Brisbane 1862 ship unknown died Bega NSW 1920
I think my John William was sentenced to transportation October 1861 four years.

Hi, Robert -

He's not "my" John Lucas. I'm not related to you - just one of the helpers on the GR boards.

I posted the information about "Slains Castle" because you said in your post of
25 Jan 2016 00:00 that that was the ship he had travelled on.

Your post copied here for ease of reference:

I have found the records I was searching for. Joseph Lucas 39 arrived Port Phillip 1851, aboard the ship "Slains Castle" With him was his wife Eliza Ann 36 his daughter also Eliza Ann 6 His son John William 4 (my GGGrandfather) and daughter Frances 2.

(Or perhaps I'm confused, and you've been asking about two different John William Lucases?)

EDIT:
Yes, I see I am confused, and that it was pointed out that the Slains Castle family were from Northamptonshire. I should have read all the posts!

Re the ship -

Have you Googled the ship name? There's a fair bit about it:

New thread started by Robert today:

John William Lucas

Born about 1848 Lancashire England. Arrived Brisbane Australia 1862 age 14, apparently accompanied some horses imported from England. Records relating to arrival apparently lost in a flood in Brisbane. I need some information regarding the ship and if someone has details of parents, father Joseph according to obituary.
Worked in Sydney on the GPO construction and married Celia Augusta Sheather.
Arrival in Australia is a mystery. Most of married life in Bombala NSW.

Advised to keep everything on this thread.

To Gins, you did ask about my grandfather. He was John Charles Lucas B1878, the son of John William Lucas
Married Mabel Jane Wilbers B1884 in Bombala NSW 1902.
This the area where my father Hugh John Edward Lucas was born.

I did find the arrival in Adelaide, but your research is incredible. For many years I was mistaken with a Benjamin Lucas from Ireland. Now everything is clear. I cannot thank you enough

Family Notices

DEATH. Died at Young Street, Parkside, on 11th March, 1890 Eliza Ann Lucas, aged 75. Mrs. Lucas, whose death is recorded above, was the Bible Woman of the North East Bible Woman's Mission for fourteen years, namely, from 1875 to the end of 1889, The Committee of that Mission valued her very highly, and regretted that her serious illness obliged them to accept her resignation. During her office she endeared herself to many, who will remember and lament her long, and yet be glad that they knew one who was so active in good works, and in spite of illness, 80 sympathetic with other sufferers, who having met and overcome difficulties in her own life, could aid with advice and encouragement those who were in trouble, and grudging no time or labour in giving help. During her last illness, her cheerfulness 'was wonderful, with entire resignation to the will of God.

A message from Robert:

You are right, the name on the marriage certificate is John William Luckes,
he probably could not spell his name. All other records of the marriage state the surname as Luck. I still have difficulty locating his father, as no parents names were registered on the marriage certificate. Joseph Lucas is a common name.

I have asked Robert to reply on here so that everyone can see the information
