I think my John William was sentenced to transportation October 1861 four years.

Hi, Robert -

He's not "my" John Lucas. I'm not related to you - just one of the helpers on the GR boards.

I posted the information about "Slains Castle" because you said in your post of
25 Jan 2016 00:00 that that was the ship he had travelled on.

Your post copied here for ease of reference:

I have found the records I was searching for. Joseph Lucas 39 arrived Port Phillip 1851, aboard the ship "Slains Castle" With him was his wife Eliza Ann 36 his daughter also Eliza Ann 6 His son John William 4 (my GGGrandfather) and daughter Frances 2.

(Or perhaps I'm confused, and you've been asking about two different John William Lucases?)

EDIT:
Yes, I see I am confused, and that it was pointed out that the Slains Castle family were from Northamptonshire. I should have read all the posts!

There is a John Lucas sentenced in October 1861 in Manchester to 4 years imprisonment (not penal servitude) for stealing bales of cotton

Robert Report 4 Apr 2016 20:40

According to England & Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892
John Lucas and Joseph Garnett sentenced to 4 years penal servitude.
At the time sentences less than 12 months, imprisonment, over 12 months, penal servitude. Can I get an age of John Lucas at the date of the sentence?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 Apr 2016 22:25

The record doesn't give his age at date of sentence.
