PatinCyprus Report 9 Jul 2016 09:27

Beatrice Maud would be pregnant by November 1901 which ties in with 11th June birth. My son was born early June and I was being very sick Oct/Nov :-( so that Edward is still a possibility.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 9 Jul 2016 09:31

The Edward with father James gives birth date for school 12 May 1902 not 11 June 1902 as in 1939 register.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 9 Jul 2016 09:41

Beatrice Maud married Edward Freeman, Ellen. She was a pregnant widow almost as soon as married in 1901. Beatrice Maud married again in 1907 and her son from her previous marriage, Edward Freeman, is living with the new family in 1911 and is down as a relative. Maybe too difficult for his step father to work out his true relationship.

This may be the Edward we are looking for and the death whilst young could be your friend's grandfather not father.

Until we get the marriage cert it will be difficult to find out which family we should be looking for.

I think parents might be James Freeman born abt 1844 City of Norwich & Martha Lambert born abt1863 Ramsgate as it has Edward born in Forest Hill & Roy noted Forest Hill on a slip of paper he gave me.Will confirm when certificate arrives

LondonBelle Report 10 Jul 2016 07:13

The only problem with the Edward, son of James & Martha, is that his date of birth on the School's Admission document is incorrect although I realise this is not conclusive as our Ancestors on many occasions had problems with their correct birth date!

With regards, to the Edward who was married and died in 1901 it looks like he was born in Notting Hill, Middlesex.

1901 Census - 41 Reckett Road, Chiswick, Middlesex

Edward Freeman 28 b Notting Hill, Boarder, occ Labourer Paper Stg Works

So, could Roy's Edward have been born in Notting Hill rather than Forest Hill?

Hopefully, the Marriage Cert will be able to point us in the direction!

Please come back on this Thread when you have the details...Thanks

Probate gives Edward's middle name as Percy. I think that James and Martha were his parents:

Edward didn't marry until 1929- so this could be him on the electoral registers with his mother in 1926-1929. He's then listed living with Alice (This is the only Edward Percy Freeman listed on the London Electoral registers) :

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

1926- 1929
77 Elderton Road, Sydenham Ward, Lewisham
Martha Freeman
Edward Percy Freeman

(Martha and James are listed at this address in 1918. Martha is at this address 1930- 1935 listed alone)
------------------------------------------

1930
41 Kent House Road, Sydenham East Ward, Lewisham
George Armfield
Ethel Armfield
Harold Percy Armfield
Edward Percy Freeman
Alice Grace Freeman
--------------------------------------------

In 1936, Martha then moves to 27 Elderton Road, and is then listed with:

Frederick James Penfold
Rosalind Penfold
Ernest William Penfold
George Edward Penfold
Rose Mary Penfold
Martha Freeman
---------------------------------------

Rosalind was Edward's sister- she married Frederick J Penfold in Lewisham 1911.

Just thinking about the school record- there's a couple of entries for sister Lucy too- I'm pretty certain they're for the same child, but both have different dates of birth- a birth certificate was obviously not required for admission!

Name: Lucy Freeman
Age: 6
Birth Date: 1 May 1898
School: Holy Trinity School
Borough: Lewisham
Admission Date: 9 Jan 1905
Parent: James
Address: 13 Clyde Place
Notes: Holy Trinty School (0228) opened in or before 1887
---------------------------------------------

Ah, EDIT: Her birth date was likely 21st May:

Well, that all seems to fit AustinQ

Not sure, though, where the Father who died young killed by a reversing lorry fits into it all.

You're a whizz with the newspapers AustinQ just out of a matter of interest is there anything about the death of that Edward Freeman who died in 1901 (probably Nov)?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 10 Jul 2016 10:33

Still can't see anything- I'll will carry on looking for a bit though.
But remember- if the above is correct, then Edward's father was James.

I suspect this would be James death:

First name(s) JAMES
Last name FREEMAN
Gender Male
Birth year 1845
Age 77
Death quarter 4
Death year 1922
District LEWISHAM
County London

I suppose it could just be that everyone's perception of 'young' is different :-D

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 10 Jul 2016 11:42

I did think that as well- Edward P Freeman died aged 61- it's not a great age. My father died at 71 which I thought was young.

And Edward would still have been young enough to be working, so possibly the truck did reverse into him at work?

Well- hopefully when Ellen gets the certificate, we'll have more definite answers.
