He looks like an excellent candidate Dea!

(birth orig reg as Marsh in 1922)

A Clifford Chant lived in Edmonton, Alberta. There are several things about him on line (e.g. a newspaper archive where he was the best man at a wedding). A snippet says (it is hard to see the image as without a paid sub it is blurry):

'brother- in-law of the groom from Vancouver and Mr. Clifford Chant from Edmonton.'

There are also Clifford Chants in Leeds County, Ontario, and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, but I think they are older than yours should be.

go to

http://www.google.ca

and search for "clifford chant" and then select (using 'tools') pages in Canada to see what is there.

There is also a 1952 wedding of a daughter of a Clifford Chant in a small Ontario town (both her and her mother identified only as 'Mrs'), so again, an older Clifford (could be the one from Leeds County).

... And a much younger one in Manitoba (in school in the 40s) ... you never hear a name, and then when you do, you find it's common as dirt!

mgnv Report 2 Apr 2017 19:45

I don't see a Clifford Chant nor any obvious link to the householder at 1545 Monterey Ave in any contemporary Greater Victoria directory - see:
http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php/

I did find just one Clifford Chant on the 1921 census, but he's a bit older than your dad.

I've pm'ed the image (1921_050-e002916669.jpg) to Cas

EDIT - I've deleted the redundant stuff noted by JC below - I'ld not refreshed the thread page for hours.

JoonieCloonie Report 2 Apr 2017 19:55

mgnv the info about Ronald and Vera has been posted already by both myself and Dea. Dea posted the deaths info.

I also posted info about the Brantford Clifford on page 1, and CasCas made it clear that from the photo, her Clifford could not have been born 1902.

The naval Clifford Chant detailed by Dea at the top of this page seems rather certain to be the right one.

Good evening everyone. Really sorry for not replying earlier but I didnt realise the thread had 2 pages!

Thankyou all for all the help.

Joonie - I shall take a look at the CC you have provided in Canada.

Dea the chap you have noted looks a real possible. Born in the uk a couple of years older than Dad which looks about right so he possibly moved to Canada maybe lodged for a while at the address on the back of the photo? With the info youve given me Im going to pursue that family. Im sure I'll find someone related to Clifford and hopefully someone can confirn if 'uncle Clifford' moved to Canada.

I'll keep you posted if I have any success.

Thsnkyou all so so much
Cassie :-D

Little update. I have traced a family member of the Clifford CHANT b1922 Somerset and am sending her a copy of the photo to confirm if it's her uncle. Two of his siblings are still living.

He was in the Navy but didn't emigrate. Hopefully soon I will know if it's the correct chap

Fingers crossed
Cassie :-D

JoonieCloonie Report 2 Apr 2017 23:26

Not me, CC!

I have not found a single trace of a CC to fit in Canada, unfortunately.

I don't think that any of those mentioned fit the specs.

And well rats, not Dea's CC either.

Unless ... maybe he was really just temporarily in Victoria BC, perhaps passing through with a naval ship and spent the Christmas holiday, when he sent that photo?

CasCas

CasCas Report 2 Apr 2017 23:57

Update. The Clifford Chant Dea mentioned was in the navy but didn't emigrate. However may have spent time in Victoria BC.

I've made contact with his great neice and have emailed some photos for her to show Cliffs brother to see if it's the correct chap.

If it is the correct Clifford it seems the address in Canada may have been a red herring........

I,ll keep you all posted

Regards
Cassie

Dea Report 3 Apr 2017 15:32

This may well be yet another 'red herring' as I have been working on it all day and have found all the other people mentioned on there, all their marriages and extended families etc but I cannot connect them to Clifford Chant and yet there was a Clifford Chant at the funeral !!!!

It seems strange that I had previously connected him to a Frank Chant who married a Rhoda Marsh ( which may or may not be correct) :-(

I am now totally confused. - Perhaps someone else might take a look at the article below which is from 04 April 1935 - Western Daily Press - Bristol, Bristol, England

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/48717095

I am going to have much needed cup of tea and come back to it later............

Thanks,

Cassie - If nothing else, at least the siblings of that 1922 Clifford will be able to tell who who their parents were !

I do hope this connects as it is driving me quite mad. ;-) :-S

CasCas Report 3 Apr 2017 17:19

Ha ha! Not heard back yet but when I mentioned Clifford had siblings and named them the young lady confirmed that 2 of then Ernest (her great uncle) and Joyce are still living. She also mentioned Clifford married a Muriel and had one daughter. I found the marriage to Dorothy M Barrett (assume this is Muriel) and a daughter b1950 but theyre not sure where she lives but think London. I cant find a marriage for her.

So I have a bit to go on for now. Hopefully when the lady shows the photo to 'Uncle Ernie' he can confirm if its MY Cliff or not.

Sadly Clifford Chant b1922 died a couple of years ago as did his wife.

Dea - please dont go maaaadddd!! Ha ha

There is a marriage in 1977 which could well be your 'J' and it would match the London area mentioned.

Dea, Ive looked at the newspaper article and wonder if this is a different family?

Regards the parents of CLIFFORD CHANT I do believe they were Frank and Rhoda.
They married in 1922 and was registered in name Rhoda Hillier and Rhoda Marsh.

As they say the thick plottens!! Ha ha!

Hi Dea
I'm not able to find the marriage of Cliffs daughter in 1977 you mentioned. It's not on Genes Reunited which is what I use. Please could you tell me who she married and where?

Thanks ever so Mitchell
