Hi, I am trying to track down my partners family, his grandfather was Frederick Percy Barefield b. 20.2.10. We have received information from Barnardo's stating that he had brothers and sisters: Elizabeth, Albert, Daisy, George, Henry and Mary. Unsure of parents names but believe they were living in the Bethnal Green area. Any info gratefully received.

Thanks, Karen.

I looked at Katherine's age, and then the marriage date and thought WOW!!

I checked the 1901 on ancestry, and they say Katherine was born ca 1876, Behtnal Green, making her 25 in 1901 ........ or about 16 when she married!

Here is Frederick Percy's birth registration from www.freebmd.org.

You can go on there yourself ... it's free. It is a work in progress getting all bmds in the UK from September 1837 to the present day onto the internet. They are presently up to about 1920 or 1925 in most areas.

Births Jun 1910 (>99%)

BAREFIELD Frederick Percy Hackney 1b 491

If you buy his birth certificate, it will give you the names of his parents, his mother's maiden name, and where they were living.

To buy a certificate go to www.gro.gov.uk, click on Ordering Certificates Online, follow instructions.

they will ask for the GRO reference number .. that's the set of two numbers after Hackney.

Each certificate costs £7

Thank you all for your responses - I too was rather interested by Katherine's age when she and George married - were the laws the same then as they are now, ie, she would have needed parental consent to marry at 16? Interestingly, first child (another Katherine, they seemed to use K or C, just to confuse things!) wasn't born till 4 years after marriage - do you think she was probably pregnant when she married, as I can't really think of any other reason to marry so young? Perhaps the baby didn't survive or was taken away - what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks again, you have indeed got the right familis and I am now waiting on the arrival of certificates before I can take things too much further.

Also, I hvae found a baby Harriet(t) Ada Barefield born and died in 1903 in Bethnal Green. My gut instinct is that this is another of Katherine (seniors) babies who died in infancy, as the forenames are those of her younger sisters. I will order the certificate at some point (have just ordered a load and it's proving rather costly!) to be sure, but what would you think?

Thanks again, Karen x

Hi Karen

I think you needed parental consent, but the age at which you could marry was somewhat younger than nowadays

At some point it was 12 for girls and 14 for boys ..... not too sure when that was changed.

You sometimes see "of full age" on marriage certificates, and that means they were over 21 (or told the vicar they were!!).

My own grandmother was about 18 when she married in 1902, and grandfather was about a year younger. Her somewhat older sister (24) was married the next day, and immediately left to go to Liverpool and take ship to emigrate to the US.

Thanks Sylvia, would you agree that it is strange for a child of that age to marry, then have no other significant event for anoter 4 years?! Am going to check to see if her mother had a child at around the same time as Katherine married...

Karen

I do agree that it is unusual, especially in those days when there was little birth control (except for what the local wise woman offered!) ...... but it does happen.

My grandmother had only 4 children.

They married in 1902, my mother was born in 1903, then it was 1911, 1915, and 1923!

I have found no evidence of babies born and died. There might have been stillbirths or miscarriages ................ but nothing was ever mentioned when I was younger, and there is now no one to ask.
