Trying to find Baxendale

My great great great grandmother was Mary Baxendale, born Duxbury, near Standish at the beginning of the 19th century (dates vary from one document to another). Duxbury is actually a lot nearer to Chorley than it is to Standish, so I presume she belonged to the Chorley Baxendales. She and my great great great grandfather, Peter Southworth, were living in Coppull in 1841and had seven children, George, the youngest (born 1842) being my great great grandfather. There were two other Baxendale families living in Coppull in 1841, headed by Adam and Thomas. I have no evidence, but I presume them to be Mary's brothers, or cousins at least, especially Thomas. Through my research I have noticed that Adam, like Lucy, is a name that crops up again and again in a lot of Baxendale families, suggesting a connection. There are further connections between the Southworths and Baxendales, including the marriage at St Mary, Chorley in 1872 of William Southworth, son of John and Elizabeth Baxendale, daughter of Thomas, whom I suspect might be the Thomas living in Coppull in 1841. On checking the baptismal registers of Our Lady RC Church, Aspull, to find the baptisms of George Southworth's children, there are a lot of Baxendales featured, some acting as godparents for Southworth children and vice versa. I need to take the story one stage back and find the family of Mary Baxendale and any even earlier link with the Southworths. If anyone can help, I'd be really grateful.

Dear Miss Marple,

It sounds as if you are speaking of a connection to my Baxendale's. I have all those names (except for Lucy, but then I only have 1 branch of Baxendales). I have a William Baxendale marrying Jane Welsh in Chorley in 1825. They had 9 children that I have found so far. Their names are as follows Mary,John, Margaret,Joseph,William,Jane,Thomas ,Adam, Moses. I will go into my records after I send this to you and see if I can open my tree to you. Please take a look and let me know what you think.
best regards,
Nancy

Thank you for your reply. I had almost forgotten about this posting, made almost a year ago, until I was contacted a couple of days ago by a lady called Shirley, regarding the very same post. Do you have any connection to Shirley? It's quite uncanny to get two responses on the same day, after all that time.

I should really have updated, as I have found out quite a lot more about Mary Baxendale's family in the time since I posted this, and now know that she MAY have been related to the Thomas I referred to, but almost certainly NOT to Adam. It was an assumption on my part, based on the fact that all three were living in Coppull village at the time.

my Mary was the daughter of William Baxendale and Mary Heyes, and was born in Duxbury in 1806. I have found her baptism in the parish records of St Gregory, Weld Bank, Chorley. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the names of the other siblings I found, but there was a Joseph, born in 1808 (whose grave I recently saw in Chorley Cemetery) and a James and a Thomas. The church only opened in 1802, so there may have been others before that time. Some of them also married and had their children baptised at St Gregory's.

As I have mailnly been researching the Southworths, I haven't delved much deeper into the Baxendales at this point in time. I will check the info I copied down from St Gregory's parish records and will post, though it may not be for a couple of weeks.

Once again, many thanks for your reply.

Kind regards
Amanda Southworth
