The following is from Joy's friend:
I wouldn't know where to start except go backwards from my father Ernest Maxwell Burnett 1913-1985. His fathers name William and mother Jane Tyron. Both grandparents born in Canada i think.. not sure? I do know grandfather was of Scottish heritage but i know nothing of his parents. Same for his wife!
[Here is where JC realizes she wasn't paying attention, and couldn't find Ernest's birth because he was born after 1910, Ontario having the 100-year cut-off rule.]
Another cousin on the Burnett side (named William also) but spells his name (Burnet) traced the family back to Scotland to a place not far from Lockerbee where that plane crashed. He told me if you go back far enough, it leads to France. Now he did have many years ago a website on My Family.com but it's gone now and i have lost all contact with my cousins.
I know personally from experience; There are many different Burnett clans here in Canada, even here in this city and where not related within 3-4 generations that go back 200 years or so. Many bear identical names like John, William, Robert
ST. James - ST. Andrews cemetery, Orillia, Ontario, Canada ( Simcoe County )
That's where both grandparents & my parents are buried. Almost all my fathers family is there too. That's pretty much all I know.. sorry not much to go on.
Don't have none of the certificates, already gave you fathers parents names. Dad's brothers: Robert, Stanley, Edward, Roy. Sisters: Annie, Albena, Gladys, Pearl. My dad Ernie or Ernest... he may have been born in Matchadash township, in the county of Simcoe. It was & still is a rural area so he was born on a dirt farm and that's all I know. Dad never talked about his parents to me and I never knew them as a child. Grandfather was dead before I was born and grandmother died when I was about 6 yrs or so. No memories of either. ):
I'm the youngest of four boys, my oldest brother is 14 yrs older and no contact with him. Only my auntie Pearl is still alive but she is really old and far away in a home somewhere up north.

My first effort:
Okay, last things first!
http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collections/virtualmem/Detail&casualty=465508
This is the page for Harry Burnett at the Virtual War Memorial. It gives this info:
In memory of Private HARRY CHARLES BURNETT who died on August 6, 1917
Service Number: 823724 Age: 23 Force: Army Unit: Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) Division: 14th Bn.
Date of Birth: August 19, 1893 Township of Ryde, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
Son of William and Mary Ann (née Fox) Burnett. Husband of Myrtle Burnett of London, Ontario. He is commemorated on the family gravemarker with his parents at Hamlet Cemetery near Sparrow Lake, Ontario.
Commemorated on Page 210 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
and the link for looking at the image of that page is:
http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/collections/books/bww1/ww1210.jpg
Very unusually, there is a photograph of Harry to the Virtual War Memorial site -- there is a link there to click to see it, and then you have to click on his name to see the photo, but here's the direct link to it:
http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/collections/virtualmem/photoview.cfm?casualty=465508&photo=6611
It was submitted by the 1st Hussars Museum, not by a family member, though.
"Enlisted in 1914, went overseas with the 142nd Battalion. Died of wounds received at Vimy Ridge."
This is the corresponding entry at the CWGC site, but it has none of the detail:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=465508
This is a direct link to the image of his WWI attestation papers:

Harry married Myrtle in Middlesex County (London, Ontario) -- I don't pay for access so I can't see the date, and her name has been b*ed up in the Ancestry transcription, which says "Myrtle Adline Axline".
Searching for marriages for Burnett with parents William Burnett and Mary Fox, there seems to be one other:
Alice Edna Burnett
Searching for Burnett births with parents William Burnett and Mary Ann Fox, it's hard to tell, because in addition to three with those parents (in one case it says "Fos"), there are several with Mary Ann Fox mother and "_____Burnett" father. I'm not paying for the detailed results, you see.
The parents' marriage may be mistranscribed as Mary Ann Fox + William Bennett, in Simcoe County.
Okay ... I searched for births with mother Mary Ann Fox and no other info, and caught some mistranscriptions -- Cassie Bernett in Muskoka, William Brener? in Middlesex, Lilly Jane Burnet in Muskoka, William James Burnett in Simcoe, ... I can't tell for a number of others, but those seem likely.
Problem is, not one of those names matches the list your friend gave: Dad's brothers: Robert, Stanley, Edward, Roy. Sisters: Annie, Albena, Gladys, Pearl.
Does he know whether all of them would have been born by 1911? 1901?
Even using Ancestry (which allows fuzzy searches) I'm not finding them in 1901 or 1911.
Okay ... in 1901, I found the ones whose births I was looking at:
*surname Burnet* William James 1873 Lilly J 1881 Minnie E 1882 Cassie 1886 Alice E 1890 Henry C 1894 parents William and Mary A, in Ontario County North.
Here's the link to the free site for 1901:
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=97130&highlight=14
It shows the list of names and also the original image. Henry C's birthdate is 19 August 1894, so that really has to be him with an error on the year.
William was born 11 May 1850 in Scotland. His date of immigration to Canada is given as 1857.
Mary Ann was born 18 August 1855 in Ontario.
So if you do get your friend a month's sub at ancestry.ca, Joy, he will be able to find their marriage and Mary Ann's birth. Ontario marriage records give parents' full names (where the person knew them), for instance.
Joy's friend sounds like he would like to do the searching himself, and a short-time sub to ancestry.ca is cheap indeed, so shall we leave it there for him to pick up??

To trace this family further back, one really needs the pob's that I didn't guess. These can be gotten off an Ancestry transcription, or by buying the image from SP.

Glenelg Twp lies between Durham, Priceville & Markdale [Without a sub, I can't tell if I've missed any non-Burnett's in h/h] Looks like our Robt and Margt came over in 1852-1854 range, then Robt died here. Also looks like our Robt's parents come over too. Not sure who Wm + Martha are. 1851 census was taken on 12/1/1852, and our Robt and Margt aren't on it that I can see. [The 1921 UK census was completed in 1926, so Canada wasn't that bad]

837. KIRKPATRICK-FLEMING OPRs There are just 2 marr entries 1777-1854
841. MIDDLEBIE OPRs There is just 1 marr entry 1788-1854
So it's not surprising I can't find any marrs for anybody.

What I would do next if I were you is:
1) Buy $20 worth of credits at SP - if you're real economical with searches, this should get you 10 images. Get the 3 SCT censuses I've given, and then buy baptismal images of Wm + Mary's kids. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
2) Get Ancestry access for the Ont BMDs - this might be gotten at the local library, or a nearby LDS FHC - for latter search centre col at: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp Also check out Ont 1861/71 censuses - I could easily have stuffed up a bit there.
3) With marr names for women, search Ont census again - for 1881 on, you can do this with the free bit of Ancestry, plus the census links list I gave (although it's more trouble).
